Marc Suspects Something *Fear the Reaper*

    Fear the reaper

CHICAGO -- The postgame atmosphere in the Reds' clubhouse was awfully tense. Those guys know at least one move has to be made tomorrow, and Rick White and Brian Shackelford in particular didn't do themselves any favors tonight.

Bob Castellini was at the game, having flown in this afternoon, and he did not look real pleased when John Fay and I encountered him walking through the stands on our way to the clubhouse. Also, Wayne Krivsky was reportedly on the phone to Jerry Narron shortly after the game ended.

All that said, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if there are multiple moves made Wednesday. I don't think it'll measure up to the San Juan massacre of April '03, which saw the legendary Jimmy Anderson and Josias Manzanillo DFA'd and Brandon Larson optioned out, but it just feels like something bigger than simply optioning out Shackelford, for instance, needs to be done.

    I guess we'll see tomorrow.

In the meantime, some good news for one of the blog's favorite guys. The Mets have signed Jacob Cruz to a minor league deal and sent him to extended spring training. I'm sure he'll be joining Dave Williams in Norfolk before too long.

Now in his latest post he's retracted what he said earlier and feels on Shackleford will be optioned out. I wish we could have gone with multiple moves today instead.

making moves just to do it really doesn't solve anything. They need to be part of a clear strategy and the dealing for Yan is nothing but a lateral move at best and doesn't further any long term or short term plan. Yan is simply a younger version of Rick White.

Although Mercker had some great years, as did Weathers, it's time for them to go.

Weathers? he probably has the second lowest ERA in the bullpen.
I dont like him as the closer, but hes been better than most of the guys in the bullpen.

Weathers is what he is - a decent middle reliever. Expecting him to be more than that is nothing but folly. However, he looks good in comparison when surrounded by replacement level relievers.

Wayne Krivsky has made it very clear that he does not support players skipping a level, and that there will be no AA pitchers making the jump to MLB without first going through AAA. That is a stupid philosophy as each situation needs to be evaluated individually, but if that's the case there are no power arms at AAA, so why make wholesale moves when you have "Big Lots" talent to choose from?

Weathers is worth keeping, he's just not closer material. Coffey obviously is the best reliever we have. I think there's definitely reason to hang onto Belisle, namely that he is one of the few Reds relievers who can break glass with his fastball, and has shown more to me to have hope for than the likes of Ramirez or Germano, for instance. I see value in Shackelford as a LOOGY. I am not sure anyone else the Reds have in the bullpen is worthy of being there, and since Ryan Wagner has disappeared, the only guys at Louisville with decent numbers are Jason Standridge, who we've already seen enough of, Brad Salmon, who probably needs to prove more, and Tom Shearn, who could be the only one worth giving a shot but I am not sure he's got anything better at the major league level than some of these others we've been trotting out there.

The key is whether they will give a shot to the only real relief prospects we have - and these guys for the most part are in Chattanooga. Dumatrait, Coutlangus, Guevara, Medlock, Shafer.

I hope they are in fear. The Mr. Nice guy approach isn't working with this nuckleheads. Someone needs to go down and put the fear of god in these guys. They haven't played well in a few weeks. Starting pitching has still be okay, but the BP has gone to heck. The defense has been horrible. The hitting has been even worse.

It's about time. I hated all these annoying blind Reds fans who after every loss would say 'we're still up so and so' then it was 'we're only down so and so' now an 11 game over .500 record is down to 4. The bullpen is junk and the ability to drive in runs in scoring position is a joke.
