So we still have White and his what could be his twin brother in Yan. Great!
Reds Fan Since 1971
i thought i read that shackleford didn't have any options
The first of hopefully many moves over the coming weeks and months to shore up this disaster of a 'pen.
We'll burn that bridge when we get to it.
Rats!
They evidently think that White needs more time to adjust and improve now that he's not making the trip down from Springfield every day.
that's how he got to AAA after ST. The option is good for the entire year.Originally Posted by captainmorgan07
BTW, there was no chance White was going to be the odd man out and I said that last night. I don't think the FO has confidence than Yan is actually better than White so they are in a wait and see mode and can bring in Yan and not actually lose replacement level White.
with mercker off the dl yes i kno white is very bad but 3 lefties is one two many especially the way hammond's been pitching
Likewise from a financial standpoint, if you have two pitchers who are equally weak, do you really jettison the one who you're going to have to pay or the one who is probably on a split contract (and has the options)?Originally Posted by flyer85
That's not to say White might not get the boot some other time, but right now, this one was a no-brainer.
Mercker and Hammond have not been very effective this year against lefties at all. Shack has been pretty strong in that capacity.Originally Posted by captainmorgan07
Great, I guess Mercker's latest performances made Shack expendable. So, now who do you bring into get a tough lefty out? Not walk, or give up a homerun to, but out?
"Rounding 3rd and heading for home, good night everybody"
although a point others have made is that the Reds really don't have enough quality relievers to make proper use of a LOOGY.Originally Posted by BuckWoody
Very true. White is an absolute disaster and he brings nothing to the table. Shack can get lefties out and White can get no one out. The bullpen just got a lot worse.Originally Posted by BuckWoody
so im assuming reading marcs blog that this is the only move for today
Sending Shackelford down is a start but we still have Rick White on the roster. Plus Mercker has been horrible since coming off the DL so the Reds still have a long way to go.
I smell what you're cookin'.Originally Posted by flyer85
Just for grins, here are the splits on all the guys in question here:
Shack was definitley having a good year against the lefties and there is no way we want the game on the line with Esteban facing a lefty. Maybe he can be a ROOGY.Code:Shackelford SPLIT AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS BAA OBP SLG OPS vs. Left 21 3 0 1 0 2 2 1 5 0 0 .143 .250 .238 .488 vs. Right 18 8 0 0 3 6 4 0 3 0 0 .444 .545 .944 1.490 Mercker SPLIT AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS BAA OBP SLG OPS vs. Left 21 8 3 0 3 6 2 0 4 0 0 .381 .435 .952 1.387 vs. Right 22 5 2 0 1 5 5 0 4 0 0 .227 .357 .455 .812 Hammond SPLIT AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS BAA OBP SLG OPS vs. Left 26 8 0 0 2 5 0 0 5 0 0 .308 .308 .538 .846 vs. Right 37 9 2 0 0 1 3 0 11 0 0 .243 .300 .297 .597 White SPLIT AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS BAA OBP SLG OPS vs. Left 27 8 2 1 2 7 0 0 6 0 0 .296 .296 .667 .963 vs. Right 61 23 3 0 2 14 3 1 8 1 0 .377 .409 .525 .934 Yan SPLIT AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS BAA OBP SLG OPS vs. Left 32 11 2 0 3 15 9 0 6 1 1 .344 .476 .688 1.164 vs. Right 50 8 3 0 1 6 4 1 10 1 0 .160 .236 .280 .516
