    Re: princeton's official 2006 draft

Obviously it will be years before the 2006 draft can be judged, but I decided to check and see how the players I would have picked have played so far.

    1. Tim Lincecum. 28 K's in 17 innings in High A ball. They are using him as a starter (I agree with that - he started in college). Opponents hitting .177 against him. 3.18 ERA in four starts. He would have been incredible with Bailey and Cueto.

    2. Brett Anderson. He signed with Arizona but I could find no stats on him.

    3. Cole Gillespie. He is raking in the Pioneer League. .338 BA, 7 HR, 27 RBI's. 31 walks against 30 strikeouts. The Reds actual third round pick (Valaika) has been even better than him though.

    4. Eddie Degerman. Playing rookie ball. Seven starts with 2.59 ERA. 41 K's in 31.1 innings with .236 BA against. Reds took Justin Reed, who I think would have been a good football player. He's hitting about .180 in the Gulf Coast League.

    5. Jordan Newton. I am shocked at how poorly this guy has hit. .183 BA and .573 OPS in NY-PA League. His OBP is .316. For me, he projected as a catcher who would hit for average. Maybe not. Actual pick Josh Ravin is showing better in Billings.

    6. Tim Bascom. College pitcher signed with Padres but I found no stats. They may have shut him down due to excessive work. Actual pick Jordan Smith has been tremendous in Billings.

    Re: princeton's official 2006 draft

Bump. Over the last 10 days...

At High A Lake Elsinore, Matt Antonelli is 16 for his last 40 (.400 BA), 10 BB, 6 Ks, and 5 for 6 on SBs.

Over the same span, Drew Stubbs is 5 for 39 (.128 BA), 5 BBs, 17 Ks, and 3 for 3 on stolen bases with the Dayton Dragons.

Edit: Is it really possible that my next post is #4,000? Better make it memorable.

9/1/08: Matt Antonelli makes his ML debut for the Padres and singles against Greg Maddux in his first AB.

That's looking like an excellent draft. Lincecum has developed into a Cy Young contender and Masterson has a 3.33 ERA and .694 OPS against in 75.2 innings with the Red Sox.

Not too shabby. Also, BA put there top 10 revisited form the 2006 draft out last week. See below:

    1. Royals. Tim Lincecum, rhp (originally went to Giants, 10th overall)
After taking Alex Gordon second overall in 2005, Kansas City would opt for a No. 1 starter over another cornerstone third baseman (Evan Longoria).

    2. Rockies. Evan Longoria, 3b (Rays, third overall)
Longoria would make it two straight Long Beach State stud infielders for Colorado in the first round, following Troy Tulowitzki.

    3. Rays. Joba Chamberlain, rhp (Yankees, 41st overall)
With Longoria off the board, the Rays would turn to Chamberlain, who fell out of the top 10 picks in 2006 because of medical concerns.

    4. Pirates. Clayton Kershaw, lhp (Dodgers, seventh overall)
Rather than take another pitcher who would need surgery (Lincoln), Pittsburgh would get a younger, healthier ace.

    5. Mariners. Brandon Morrow, rhp (Mariners, fifth overall)
Seattle has no complaints with Morrow, who made an almost immediate impact on its bullpen and now is transitioning to its rotation.

    6. Tigers. Max Scherzer, rhp (Diamondbacks, 11th overall)
Both pitchers cost a lot to sign, and it says here that Scherzer will deliver a better return than the arm Detroit invested in (Andrew Miller).

    7. Dodgers. Travis Snider, of (Blue Jays, 14th overall)
Unable to get Kershaw, Los Angeles would pick up a nice consolation prize in Snider, the best high school hitter in the draft.

    8. Reds. Brett Anderson, lhp (Diamondbacks, second round)
Miller might be the best option at this point, but Cincinnati likely wouldn't meet his price tag. Lars Anderson and Matt LaPorta would be attractive hitters but wouldn't fit positions of need, so the Reds would move on to the next pitcher on the board.

    9. Orioles. Lars Anderson, 1b (Red Sox, 18th round)
Baltimore wasn't willing to go over slot at the time and was intent on taking a hitter. The best available would be Anderson, who went from a potential sandwich pick to the 18th round because he asked for a $1 million bonus.

    10. Giants. Andrew Miller, lhp (Tigers, sixth overall)
Lincecum would be long gone, but San Francisco could have Miller, who was considered the best prospect in the entire draft at the time.
