In all honesty, and I can get chewed out for saying this, but does $$$ seem to be coming into play here? I've been in meetings for a good part of the day and it seems as if we are overdrafting like never before. Am I wrong?

Me neither, but I'd like to have a Q&A with Krivsky.

Coming into play? nah. I think Abe Lincoln is actually making the picks.

It's like I'm reading my own stuff from the waaaaaaay back machine (aka The Archives).

(Randa to the Pads for two minor leaguers and the 2002 Draft thread, to be specific.)
Good to see you back, it's been awhile (although I don't read every thread anymore). Heck, I even had a "gm" siting a few weeks ago. Good points.

On no one drafting Laporta, it doesn't matter when/where he is picked. Boras has been able to create his own set of draft rules and you sign up for 'em when you pick one of his players. You either pay the money or his player won't sign. Thats why Hochevar was the 40th pick last year and the first this year. If somebody takes Laporta they know that they have to offer 1st/2nd round money or it is a wasted pick because he won't sign.

    Now just highlights.

Round 7: Tigers make RHP Jonah Nickerson from Oregon St. the third Beavers pitcher drafted. He just buzzsawed the Kansas Jayhawks for OSU in the College WS this weekend.

Reds get... Justin Turner, 2B, Cal State Fullerton. 5'11"/180#. Probably a utility guy, right?

The Perfect Game USA announcer that I think is so smart said, "You'd be surprised if he's not a big-league infielder."

I never thought I'd see the day when I was one of the most optimistic guys on the board.

Let's hope Cast isn't going to end up pulling another Lindner/Allen con job on us. I couldn't take that, so I'm going to be optimistic for awhile.

Re: 2006 Official MLB Draft Thread

That leaves the top draft on Fullerton's' team to a duel between its double-play tandem, shortstop Blake Davis and second baseman Justin "Red" Turner.

While Davis has better tools, most observers favored Turner, a senior who is the heart and soul of the Titans and a former batboy in the program. Many college baseball fans remember him from the 2003 College World Series, when as a freshman he was hit in the face while squaring to bunt on a pitch against Stanford. Turner also turned his ankle on the play and missed Team USA's college national trials after doctors determined that he broke a bone in his ankle on the play. He recovered to have a steady, gritty career and saved his best for last, posting career highs in batting (.352), slugging (.500) and stolen bases (18) as a senior--after declining to sign with the Yankees as a 29th-round pick last year. One scout compared Turner favorably with Red Sox prospect Dustin Pedroia, an All-American at Arizona State and a 2004 second-round pick. Like Pedroia, Turner makes all the plays defensively (even at short) thanks to superior footwork and profiles as an above-average defender on the right side of the infield thanks to his fringy arm. He's an average runner with excellent instincts.
