4th round pick Justin Reed signs with the Reds.

    Reed signs with Reds

    By Rod Walker
    rwalker@clarionledger.com

Justin Reed, a fourth round pick by the Cincinnati Reds in Tuesday's Major League Baseball amateur draft, signed a deal with the team this morning.

Reed, who played at Hillcrest as a senior after transferring from Callaway, wouldn't give specifics of the deal.

"I am definitely happy with it though," said Reed, the 114th overall pick. "I will say that it is more than $300,000."

Justin Maxwell, the 114th overall pick in last year's draft, received a signing bonus of $386,000.

Reed leaves Saturday for Sarasota, Fla, to join the Sarasota Reds, Cincinnati's Class A affiliate.

    22nd rounder Pointer signs...

    June 9, 2006
MIKE FORMAN - Advocate Sports Writer

Adam Pointer's first pitching appearance at Alvin Community College wasn't his last.

Pointer hadn't pitched since his senior year of high school at Bay City, but he took the mound because the team needed pitchers for a fall game.

"I started throwing and when I was through, the scouts there told them how hard I was throwing," Pointer said. "When they found out, I became their closing pitcher."

Pointer's 90-plus mph fastball helped him compile a 3-1 record and a 2.00 ERA while saving eight games for Alvin this season. It also caught the attention of the Cincinnati Reds, who drafted him in the 22nd round on Wednesday.

Pointer signed with the Reds on Thursday and will report to their Gulf Coast League rookie team in Sarasota, Fla., on Saturday.

"I did a lot of long tossing from the outfield and my arm got strong," said Pointer, who had offers to attend Houston Baptist and Prairie View A&M. "I'm physically ready, my arm is live, and I feel like I'm at that point."

Pointer was primarily an outfielder at Bay City and after a redshirt season, began his career at Alvin in the outfield. He also played in the outfield this season, hitting .302 with two home runs and 21 RBIs.

But Manny Rodriguez, the area scout for the Reds, who coached Pointer during his freshman and sophomore years at Bay City, has no doubt Pointer's future is on the mound.

"He was throwing 91-92 early this season and when I saw him again he was up to 93-94 and topped out at 95," Rodriguez said. "He has the ability to come in and challenge people. All of a sudden he just turned it loose."

    Re: 2006 Draft signings thread

Do you really think that Reed is going straight to High A or that that is just a misprint of him going to the GCL team in Sarasota?

I really can't see a high school outfielder going straight to High A, even though they havent had much hitting this year.....
This will not change until the Reds win the World Series.......

    Re: 2006 Draft signings thread

Is Justin Reed the very athletic CF that had a scholarship to play football at Ole Miss?

If so that is awesome news, because I was afraid he wouldn't sign.

12th-rounder Logan Parker told Lance McAlister on 1360 HOMER that he was signing his contract Thursday the 8th. But I haven't seen any official announcements.

Thanks. This is good news that we signed a Junior College and a high schooler so far. we were able to keep them from going to college. Was Logan Parker a high schooler or College player?

    Re: 2006 Draft signings thread

This looks like a good start towards signing our draft picks. Twelve of our 50 round picks have signed. Three of the top 10 rounds signed. One who was a Highschool player. Four Junior college players signed.

There are two Reds minor league teams in Sarasota. The Sarasota Reds who are the A team in the South Atlantic Leauge and the GCL Reds who are in the Rookie league.

Sarasota Reds are in the Florida State League (high A), I thought.
