Big lefty Jamie Arneson threw 7 shutout innings in his start yesterday and struckout 10 vs the Monterey Sox. The Reds really need to sign this kid.

Chris Valaika, the Reds third round selection from UC Barbara, is now in the fold.

    Team additions
Chris Valaika, the Reds' third-round pick, arrived in Billings Sunday and will be added to the roster soon, pending a physical today. The arrival of the shortstop from UC-Santa Barbara means the Reds' top three draft picks this year are in Billings.

The Mustangs are also awaiting seventh-round pick Justin Turner and 32nd-rounder Danny Dorn, an outfielder. Both are playing for Cal State-Fullerton in the College World Series.

Burleson said he's very familiar with Turner, a second baseman.

"He's a gamer, a lead-off guy, a guy that really makes your team go," Burleson said.

30th rounder LHP Lee Tabor, is now showing on the GCL roster.

FLORENCE -- Left-handed pitcher Lee Tabor, who helped lead Francis Marion University to the NCAA Division II College World Series this past season, recently signed a professional contract with the Cincinnati Reds and reported to the organization's rookie team in Sarasota, Fla.

Tabor was chosen as the eighth pick in the 30th round of Major League Baseball's 2006 first-year player draft on June 7. He chose to sign with the Reds rather than return to Francis Marion for his senior campaign.

The Sarasota squad competes in the Gulf Coast League and opens its season on Tuesday (June 20). The GCL schedule runs through Aug. 21. Tabor will join a staff that includes right-hander Nick Wandless, who recently finished his career at USC Aiken.

This past season, Tabor posted an 8-5 record with a 3.19 earned run average. He completed eight of 16 starts with one shutout, and ranked among the NCAA Division II leaders in strikeouts with 118 in 115 2/3 innings. Opponents batted only .238 against him.

The Manning native helped lead the Patriots to their most successful season ever with a 41-18 record, earning a No. 6 national ranking, and making the College World Series appearance.

An honorable mention All-American in 2005, he compiled an 18-10 career mark with a 2.84 ERA in three seasons at FMU. He fanned 230 batters in 243.2 innings.

Tabor is the fourth FMU player to be drafted over the past five years. Outfielder Quentin Davis (.278 avg., 17 stolen bases) is currently playing for the Class A Rome Braves.

Tabor was also playing this summer for the Florence RedWolves, with his last appearance coming in last Tuesday's game at Asheboro.

FYI, Chris Gruler is also now on the roster.

10th rounder Josh Roenicke is evidently now in the fold. He is listed on the GCL roster...

So, assuming what we read is true, and Justin Turner does head to Billings soon, that leaves only our #5 pick RHP Josh Ravin as our only unsigned top 10 pick.

    Ravin Turns Pro

Chancellor right-hander signs with Cincinnati Reds

    June 24, 2006

Chatsworth senior pitcher Josh Ravin has signed with the Cincinnati Reds, who selected the right-hander in the June major league amateur draft.

Ravin, a right-hander who was 6-2 with a 2.68 earned-run average this season, was selected by the Reds in the fifth round as the 144th overall player chosen.
    From Chatsworth (CA) HS website.

Justin Turner is a senior, so he will sign.

I like the way they've gotten this done.

I'd like to see another source besides a HS website, but yeah, it's nice.

TWO MORE SIGN: The Reds signed their fifth- and 10th-round draft picks:

    5. Josh Ravin, a right-hander out of Chatsworth High in Reseda, Calif.

    10. Josh Roenicke, a right- hander from UCLA.

Roenicke appeared in a GCL game two or three days ago (two scoreless innings). Ravin I hadn't heard.

That's 26 signings counting Turner and Dorn, plus all of the top ten and everyone in the top fifteen except Kainer. Now let's see if we can get Arneson or Lutz in here.

I love how they are getting most of these guys signed. It shows they are trying to improve the system.

Lutz is a reliever with great stuff and has a chance to move quickly. Arneson is a big lefty at 6'5" with plus velocity. Signing both of those guys would be huge in terms of improving the depth of the pitching.

I wouldn't say 2 more mid-round guys is a significant boost to the depth in the system, but it's always good to add talent. I think the Reds' idea with these guys is to assess their performance in summer league ball -- and then make a run at them, or not.

But both guys were considered top 5 round talents, IIRC, and fell for different reasons. Adding someone like that to the system is always a boost.

There were three guys drafted that fell for signability reasons. Only Ryan Wehrle (18th) has stated publicly that he's not signing this year, although Arneson (16th) seems to have indicated that he needs to be quite impressed with the offer.

Lutz I haven't seen anything about, at least with regards to his signing or likeliness thereof.

    AMATEUR DRAFT
Cincinnati picks former Lower Dauphin ace Lutz
    Thursday, June 08, 2006
    BY ERIC F. EPLER
    For The Patriot-News
His rather quiet Tuesday afternoon aside, Derrik Lutz found relief on day two of Major League Baseball's amateur draft. The former Lower Dauphin ace and George Washington University's top right-hander was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 19th-round yesterday, 564th overall.

"It was nerve-racking because of the excitement and possibility [of being drafted earlier]," said Lutz, who battled tendinitis late this season. "Maybe some teams were scared away because they thought I was injured? But it's probably better this way. Now that's it's done, the options are there. The Red are going to follow me this summer and going back to school is an option."

Lutz, a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference pick, earned a closer's role during his freshman campaign and quickly set GW's single-single mark in saves (12). That nugget earned the 6-foot, 205-pound hurler a spot on the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team.

In 2005, the hard-thrower moved to the Colonials' starting rotation and posted an impressive 8-1 mark before heading to Chatham (Mass.) and the prestigious Cape Cod Summer League.

Interest grew as Lutz, in 25 innings, allowed no runs and struck out 39 with 12 saves. This spring, Lutz went 6-4 with a team-leading 1.54 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 992/3 innings.

The Reds will follow Lutz' progress in Chatham, where he'll pitch from the bullpen.

"Teams were not likely to use a 10th or even 11th-round pick on someone that could possibly be injured," said Lutz. "They want to be sure and once I get [to Chatham] in the summer, I'll be able to prove to the Reds that I'm definitely 100 percent."

Another Mid-Penn product, third-baseman Jared Olson, was plucked in the 27th round yesterday by the Texas Rangers. One year removed from Chambersburg High School, Olson led Frederick Community College to a 34-19 record this season, batting .432 with nine home runs and 58 runs batted in.

The 6-3, 200-pound Olson, who tagged 23 doubles, was an NJCAA Division II All-America selection.

Line Mountain graduate Kelly Sweppenhiser, who worked out in Toronto on May 31, was selected by the Blue Jays in the 44th round. The Herndon native capped a sensational four-year career at Virginia Military Institute by earning All-Big South Conference first-team honors for the second consecutive season.

The tough-minded third baseman led VMI to its first 30-win season and owns several VMI career totals, including hits (263), runs (172), total bases (411) and on-base percentage (.457). He hit .350 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs this season, VMI's first winning campaign in 41 years.
