Man...I don't even have a driver in my bag. Can't keep it from pushing right, so I pack a 3 wood instead. The derision from my friends is relentless- but I'd much rather be in the fairway, 30 yards back than in the woods any day. And that's where my driver puts me.

My driver comes and goes like the wind. Played for the first time in 3 months yesterday. Shot an 85 and hit my driver (Mizuno MP001) in the fairway all day long. My putting was atrocious. Think I'll hibernate for another 3 months and see if I can break 80.

I've still getting used to my new driver (Callaway BigBertha Ft3) after one month - but I would recommend it. I have found I like Callaway clubs but the brand of club is less important to me than maintaining a good swing on any particular day.

No surprise on the putting. That's how I am too. After being on the shelf (or winter), I can come out and hit the driver well, but anything that involes feel (i.e. short game and putting) are attrocious.

Problem is, the more I play, the more bad habits I introduce into my swing. So one area of my game improves and the other area gets worse.
All models are wrong. Some of them are useful.

My putting is always the part that suffers. My short game around the green is usually always pretty good. Hit a couple of flop shots within a couple of feet, and missed one very short putt. It's a humbling game.

I was golfing with my dad last month and was just off the green, which sloped severely away from me, with the hole about ten feet from the near fringe. If I tried to go towards the hole, the chances of running off the other end of the green and possibly into a bunker were very high.

So my dad walks up and says, "This is where you need to play your flop shot".

    My response:
"I'm, like, a 30 handicapper and you think I got a flop shot? Here, take the five bucks I'll owe you for this hole and track down the drink cart."

I chipped to the center of the green, which was actually about 25 feet away from the hole. Ended up two putting for a bogey, which was fine by me.
By following dad's advice I would have probably taken at least four shots to get down on that hole.

Anyway, I'll be teeing off on #1 Sunday morning (559 yards) with a 5 wood. My brother will ride me for it, but at least I know my fourth shot will be from within 75-100 yards. If I use a driver, my chances of getting to the green without picking up a penalty stroke are about 50/50.

So, when I hear guys saying they take off three months and can drive but have trouble with their touch, well, at least I know where my chips and putts are going. The driver? I never had that one anyway. Yeah, it's a humbling game.
