Fisher pitches shutout for Dayton
Right-hander strikes out 10 West Michigan batters in 1-0 victory.

DAYTON — On the night the real pro umpires returned to Minor League Baseball, there just wasn't much for them to do.

Mostly, home plate ump Brad Myers called strikes because West Michigan starter Luke French threw them.

Dayton's Carlos Fisher threw more.

"I feel like I can throw better," Fisher said.

Oh my, who's going to want to face that? Monday night, Fisher threw seven shutout innings in what became a 1-0 Dragons victory in a Class A Midwest League game at Fifth Third Field.

He struck out 10. He walked just one, and he allowed three singles, two of them in the fifth inning, neither of them hit particularly hard. Neither damaged his game.

Fisher did allow a ground-rule double in the seventh inning that center fielder B.J. Szymanski almost caught up with, but with one out, Fisher finished his inning with a ground out and strikeout. He finished every inning but one with a strikeout.

"I think my fastball got better as the game went on," Fisher said. "At least it feels like it got better. And my changeup, too. I wanted to leave the game with a chance to win. I would have liked to have had maybe three runs."

His team managed one, manufactured off two walks, a wild pitch, a sacrifice bunt and a Michael DeJesus sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

The victory moved Fisher to 6-3 and sliced his ERA to 2.93, so he has been good before. That he was this good at home was the big difference.

Sabermetricians can mull his numbers entering the game: near equal innings at home and on the road. Near equal hits allowed home and road. Near equal opponents batting average home and road. Exact equal walks home and road. A 4-0 record and 1.83 ERA on the road, a 1-3 record and 4.73 ERA at home.

Dragons pitching coach Larry Pierson thought about it.

"It's making the pitch," Pierson said. "It's different trying to make a pitch when you've got 8,000 fans here and making it in Cedar Rapids. For a young guy, a lot of people in the stands makes a difference.

"I'll say this about Carlos. Everything he throws has some kind of movement on it."

West Michigan batters couldn't move him at all.
