    Zach Ward throws another gem

    7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K, 11 GO/3 FO

Ward's 2006 numbers now look like this:

    71.2 IP, 50 H, 1 HR, 20 BB, 66 K, 2.89 ERA, 0.98 WHIP.

Only allowing one HR in over 70 innings is quite amazing. The K-rate is very solid and even more impressive is that his groundout/flyball ratio is Brandon Webb-esque.

    Bump this guy to Sarasota.

I dont remember who it was that said it, but someone emailed the Dragons announcer and told them once the weather warms up that Ward would start improving and rack up a bunch of strike outs... it looks like that has happened.

Take away his first three week "loosening" period, he has been steller as a 22 year old in Dayton should be. Though the Reds almost moved him into the bullpen, which confused me.

    Zach Ward since May 1:

    50.2 IP, 31 H, 0 HR, 11 BB, 55 K, 71 GO/23 FO, 2.51 ERA, 0.84 WHIP.

Ward has gone 60.2 innings without giving up a HR.

Nope, keep him in Dayton... no need to rush him.

He's a college pitcher, 22 years old. It's not rushing him.

Zach Ward is, by far, the most advanced pitcher at Dayton; he should certainly be moved to Sarasota.

    Other updates:

Chattanooga is winning 3-2 in the 4th inning. Joey Votto is 2-for-2 with a HR(12) and single. It's safe to say that Mr. Votto is locked in right now.

Votto homered again in the 8th inning. He's now 3-for-5 with 2 HR in this game to give him 13 home runs on the season to go along with 23 doubles and 2 triples.

IIRC, it's been a while since the Lookouts won a 1st half championship...

In fact, I think the rumor was they originally wanted to start him in Sarasota last year when he signed, but they decided to shut him down instead and then began him at Dayton to get the rust off.

Assuming Bailey gets moved to Chattanooga, I'd say you'll see Ward take his spot in the FSL. Cueto might not be far behind.

Cueto should be kept in Dayton all year, IMO. Ward, OTOH, needs promoted to Sarasota.

Considering the glut in the rotation between Sarasota and Dayton, I'd agree with you on Cueto. Let him spend the whole year dominating. I always prefer that over what's happened with Tyler Pelland.

Spending your age 20 season dominating the Midwest League isn't exactly going to stunt your growth.

That is great news about the first half championship for the Lookouts. If they win second half as well would they automatically advance in the playoffs or would the two second place teams play to see who advances against the Lookouts?
