Joey Gathright Traded to the Royals

The Kansas City Royals have traded left-handed pitcher J.P. Howell to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for center fielder Joey Gathright, ESPN.com has learned.

The Rays also sent minor league second baseman Fernando Cortez to the Royals in that deal. Cortez, 24, appeared in eight games for Tampa Bay last year, going 1-for-13. For Triple-A Durham in 2006, he was hitting .222 with a .265 on-base percentage and a .271 slugging percentage in 203 at bats.

Howell has spent the 2006 season with the Royals' Triple-A affiliate in Omaha, where he was 3-2 with a 4.75 ERA, 33 strikeouts, and 14 walks allowed in 36 innings. He also missed several weeks with shoulder soreness. Howell made 15 starts for Kansas City last year, going 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA, and was originally selected by the Royals with the first pick in the supplemental round of the 2004 amateur draft.

Gathright was sent down to Triple-A by Tampa Bay after hitting .201 with a .305 on-base percentage and .240 slugging percentage in 154 at bats while filling in for the injured Rocco Baldelli. He made his major league debut in 2004 and was originally drafted by the Devil Rays in the 32nd round of the 2001 amateur Draft.

Good trade for the D-Rays. They need more young pitching and Howell is just that.

Gathright may have crazy speed, but to use that speed, you need to actually get on base and he can't do that.

Howell had a quick rise to MLB last year after being drafted, but he's a finnese lefty... with shoulder issues. I'm not sure if either guy is a difference maker of any degree at the ML level.

Howell's fastball hits about 92, or at least it did last season. That's pretty good for a lefty. He'll be a fine player once he gets out of the Royals' murky stew.

Gathright is Brian Hunter in disguise. The D-Rays made out well with this trade.

Ugh, I'm not sure if going from the Royals to the Drays is a big step up in your career... heh. Both teams are terrible. That said, I do like Howell more than Joey G.

Wow - I think I'd have Joey Gathright a little higher along with everyone else. The other names tossed around for Gathright - wow - shocked they didn't get more - or the rumours were bad.

Hey, another live young arm in Tampa. Good for them.

Joey needs to play and get 400 AB's the rest of the season. He'll either pull through or he won't. He just wasn't going to do it here. We need bullpen help just like everyone else.
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...

Santa's list this offseason for baseball team is going to be pretty much the same for 30 baseball teams. Bullpen.

Until someone makes a bionic arm for starters, or Cinderella's wand generates AAA pitchers into serviceable reliever, bullpen help is going to be pretty hard to come by.

Wouldn't Howell be projected as a starter at somepoint?

Wasn't Gathright the guy I was told the Reds should acquire to "replace" Junior in CF, this past offseason?

Joey Gathright is now a trivia answer.

Who was the only guy to be traded downward from Tampa Bay?
