    PROSPECT PROFILE: Javon Moran

    Name: Javon Moran
    Birthdate:September 30, 1982
    Hometown: Valdosta,Georgia
    Height: 5-11
    Weight: 175
    Bats: R
    Throws: R
    Position: OF

Drafted: Selected in the 5th round (145 overall) by the Phillies of the 2003 Draft.
Acquired by the Reds via trade IN 2004. Going to Reds: Elizardo Ramirez and Javon Moran. Going to Phillies: Cory Lidle.

    Career Stats:

    Season stats:

    My thoughts:
    Positives:
Since coming over from Philly, all Moran has done is hit. At evey level he has been in the Reds organization he has hit over .300. Once he gets on watch out, because the kid can really fly. His speed also gives him good range in the outfield.

    Negatives:
He doesn't have a very good eye. Moran has only taken 5 walks in over 130 AB's this season. Javon also could improve on his stolen base %.

How fast is Moran? I keep hearing about this blazing speed, but those stolen base numbers aren't very good at all.

Very true, but stealing isn't always about speed. Look at Felipe before this year, he had alot of speed but never a good stolen base %. Sometimes SB can more be about getting reads off a pitcher and mechanics more then speed. Although speed does help, and is needed.

Here is what espn.com had to say about him coming out of college.
Speed looks like the main focus in this draft. Moss, Bourn, and Moran are all speed demons, among the fastest players in the college game this year, and will provide a quick boost of leg velocity for the farm system.
Also in a Baseball America from 2002 he was one of only 3 collegiate players to earn an 80 score for speed.

Moran continued his hot hitting tonight by going 2-5 with a run. He extended his hitting streak to 5, and has back to back multi-hit games.

Which is awesome, but he really needs to walk more if he wants to be an everyday MLB player. If not he is going to be the next Alez Sanchez, but with a better glove and without the steroids. An even better comparison would be Juan Pierre the last few years.

In 04 his walk totals weren't too bad, but they went down in 05, and he has only walked 5 times this year. You would figure the more he plays the better eye he would develop, but that hasn't been the case. I am a big Javon fan, and even if he doesn't develop an eye he still could be a 4th/5th outfielder on a major league team, but if he doesn't walk more he won't be an everyday MLB player.

Now if he hits over .300 in MLB, lack of walks really doesn't hurt you that much. So he needs to either keep working really hard on his hitting to become a .300 hitter on the highest level, or he needs to walk more.

Moran went 1-4 again today, and extends his hit strak to 7. He also walked in the game. I will update his stats Sunday night.

There are his updated season stats thru Sunday's games. I also updated his stats in my original post, and added a hitting streak watch.

He might want to stop his hit-streak. It's lowering his batting average.

If and when Denorfia gets called up to the big club, is Moran the likely candidate to replace him in Louisville?
