Thanks, JaxRed. Yeah, Pelland looked pretty good. In addition to six shutout innings, he had a pickoff (of Ron Acuna, who had stolen a base earlier in the game). Here's an inning-by-inning breakdown:Code:Team W L ERA G GS IP H R ER HR BB SO WHIP Chattanooga Lookouts 4 2 3.42 16 16 79.0 87 42 30 7 46 59 1.68

2nd: single, stolen base, K, K, K
3rd: flyout, single, 6-4-3 double play
4th: 1-2-3 (line out, K, K)
5th: BB, K, single, infield single, flyout, K
6th: flyout, flyout, single, pickoff
After putting together another great start for the Lookouts to end June, July took an ugly turn for Pelland on Wednesday. He threw five innings, giving up six runs (five earned), six walks, and two wild pitches. Here are the updated stats:
(One interesting thing to note from the game is that Rick Asadoorian, a Lookouts outfielder and 1999 first-round draft pick of the Red Sox, pitched two shutout innings with five strikeouts and picked up the win for Chattanooga. The biggest knock on Asadoorian is that he doesn't make enough contact at the plate.)Code:Team W L ERA G GS IP H R ER HR BB SO WHIP Chattanooga Lookouts 5 2 3.59 18 18 90.1 94 49 36 8 55 70 1.65
Since my last update, control has still been an issue, as his BB-rate is up, but he's been giving up less hits to balance things out. Despite his most recent performance being so horrible, his past few outings haven't looked too bad overall.
He leads the Lookouts in the following categories: innings pitched, games started, hits allowed, runs and earned runs allowed, hit batsmen, walks, and strikeouts. And for those keeping track, he's second only to Homer Bailey in age.

Tyler Pelland was moved to the bullpen earlier this year. It was a move that was widely considered to be fate as it's been speculated he was used as a starter for the sole purpose of getting more innings to work on his stuff and build up his strength. The story on Pelland is the same as it was in the past: He lacks control and is very streaky. If you think Jekyll & Kyle is bad, take a look at Jekyll & Ty.Code:W L ERA G GS IP H R ER HR BB SO WHIP 32 31 4.18 132 79 462.2 468 266 215 31 258 421 1.57
If you remove two of his most recent outings, you can bring his ERA down to an impressive 3.12. Pelland is a lefty with heat, so he'll get plenty of chances, but he still needs to work on his poise, command, and control. He's got a lot of time to do it, though, since he's only 23 years old and in AA.

All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!
Pelland is a lefty - look for a late blossom. For some reason, it seems lefties take longer to "get" it. He's an interesting prospect for the pen someday but my guess is if he ever becomes a solid big leaguer it will be after a few seasons of struggling.
In his fifth year of professional ball and at the age of 23, Pelland has made the jump to AAA. His WHIP is the lowest it's been since his rookie league days, and he's back to striking out more than one batter per inning. The sky's the limit!

I would love to see him in Cincinnati some time next year. A hard throwing lefty out of the pen would be real nice.
It's weird to think he's only 23, seems like he's been around for a decade.
