Another Anaheim sports team changing it's name

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The Ducks are mighty no more.

The NHL team will take the ice next season as the Anaheim Ducks, wearing new uniforms with different colors and a redesigned logo.

The makeover cuts the team's final remaining ties to former owner The Walt Disney Co., which sold the Ducks last year to Orange County residents Henry and Susan Samueli.

The team kept Ducks in its nickname after a poll of season ticketholders.

"A brand image is so hard to build," Henry Samueli said. "If you have to change the name, then you're wiping out 13 years of brand history, not only in Orange County but in the whole country."

The new logo is the word "Ducks" in gold with white trim and orange shadowing superimposed on a black background. The capital "D" resembles a webbed foot, and the spacing inside the "D" is an arrow pointing toward the rest of the word.

Black and gold replace purple and teal as the team's main colors, with orange and white serving as accents.

"I really love the new look and thank the Samuelis for giving me a chance to have input on the design," winger Teemu Selanne said.

Home uniforms will feature black jerseys and socks with gold, white and orange stripes. On the road, the Ducks will wear white jerseys and socks with gold, black and orange stripes.

Disney owned the franchise from its inception in 1993 and named the team after its movie, "The Mighty Ducks."

At least it's not something goofy like Los Angeles Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Days before the Mighty Ducks were to change their name to the Anaheim Ducks, the City Council approved an agreement guaranteeing the word "Anaheim" can't be eliminated from the franchise.

The Ducks officially become the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday.
The agreement, unanimously approved on Tuesday, follows the embarrassment earlier this year when the city failed to keep Angels' owner Arte Moreno from changing his team's name from the Anaheim Angels to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The deal promises that either the city-owned Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim or at least one team playing there will always have the city's name in its title.

The Pond's sponsorship agreement with Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water is up for renewal in September. Because the hockey team changed its name, the Pond management could remove the city's name from the stadium title if they choose.

"I think we're pretty happy the city broadened the amendment," said Bob Wagner, the Pond and Ducks senior vice president.

The City Council voted last month to appeal the jury's verdict in the Angels case.

"...its money well-spent. Don't screw around with your freedom."

Of course, choosing black to be a significant color in the uniform is lame. Too many teams choose black for marketing or "toughness" reasons instead fo coming up with an original idea.
Wear gaudy colors, or avoid display. Lay a million eggs or give birth to one. The fittest shall survive, yet the unfit may live. Be like your ancestors or be different. We must repeat!

If they were really macho, they'd wear pink.

    The new look:
For every action there is an equal and opposite criticism.
