Per Marc's blogBurns out, Belisle in tomorrow
Mike Burns has been optioned back to Louisville. The Reds will activate Matt Belisle from the disabled list before tomorrow's game.
I commented in the Live! thread that I was supprised they optioned Burns back to Lousivlle considering that this was his third trip to the big club and all three trips were disasters. I'd prefer they DFA him to open a spot in Louiville for someone who actually stands a chance of making the team. If they just need the body in Louisville, ok, but I'd rather never see him in a Reds uniform again.

I simply don't have access to a "cares about RBI" place in my psyche. There is a "mildly curious about OBI%" alcove just before the acid filled lake guarded by robot snipers with lasers which leads to the "cares about RBI" antechamber though. - Nate
Mike Burns has been lights out in L'ville.Originally Posted by Ltlabner

IMO, its still to early to say if Burns was suffering from the butterflies int eh bigs or he's a borderline case.
No reason to DFA him. Maybe he can lead L'ville to a championship.

Burns has been lights out in Cincy also. Kind of like, "Reds down 5-2 in the 8th and Burns is coming in. Turn out the lights, this one is over."Originally Posted by oneupper
he'll do fine in louisville maybe next year mike
Absolutely. We need folks on our rosters in the minor and not everyone is going to make it in the bigs. If he can help the AAA team, great! He's not blocking anybody at the moment. Krivsky has shown he's not shy about letting folks go in the minors when he needs to, but the minor league franchises have to put a team on the field too and if this guy's helping them, great.Originally Posted by oneupper
I hope Narron isn't crazy enough to stick Belisle back into the long relief role with his effectiveness compared to the rest of our "bullpen"
Speaking of the bullpen, anyone see former Reds Sweat Machine Dennys Reyes' numbers for the Twins this year? ay caramba.
Suck it up cupcake.
Hope that's the last we see of Burns
Now to get Hammond and Weathers replaced
Welcome back Matt!! Hope he can help cure our middle relief woes.
I'd start him off in the setup role and see how he does.

I don't have much faith in Narron to get it right but Belisle presents an odd situation. Is he ready to be the 5th starter? Will he be an effective back of the pen guy? We have a glaring need for both and he's the only thing currently in the Reds system that gives you a glimmer of hope for either this year.Originally Posted by Tornon
My outside the box is to make him ready for long relief every Mays start and essentially make them both the #5 guy 4-5 innings at a time.
So essentially, you want to do with Joe Mays the same thing we did with Dave Williams? Since Mays was effective for us in relief (albeit a very small sample size) I would prefer just to stick one in the rotation and use the other out of the bullpen as a setup/goto guy. At least until we have someone other than Coffey step up and show they can get guys out.Originally Posted by Marc D

They are essentially the same guy so I don't see why not.Originally Posted by Tornon
My logic is simply that Mays appears to be our new #5 and he sure can't be counted on for a steady 6+ IP every start so why not let them share it? It gets Belisle a taste of starting and still gives the Reds a chance to win the game if you can get Mays out after 4 IP or so.
I'm fine with him as #1 setup guy too, just find a use for him.
You could just as easily use this setup with Milton; I was thinking the very same thing today for tomorrow's start: use Milton for his customary 4 1/3, and when he looks like he's getting ready to implode let Belisle clean up the mess.Originally Posted by Marc D
