Now that we have a new owner....

Do you think the Reds will be more active persuing free agents in the Japanese leagues or other Latin free agents? I know we still won't be able to out-bid teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Mets, and Seattle, who are most active with Japanese teams, but the Reds in the recent past haven't even seemed interested in talking to any of these players. Just curious what you think. Here is a player that might be available this coming off season:

Daisuke Matsuzaka is expected to be allowed to sign with an MLB club this winter via the posting system and may be one of the most sought-after free agents on the market. Matsuzaka, MVP at the WBC earlier this year, was in the midst of another dominating season in Japan, going 9-2, 2.05 with an 0.97 WHIP and a 103-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 92 innings while leading the Pacific League in both wins and strikeouts.

    I certainly hope so!
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Two things that make me leery of the Reds jumping head first into something like this:

    1) Our payroll hasn't gone up significantly, and I don't see that changing enough that we would be able to out bid a team like the Yankees, Mariners, Red Sox, Dodgers, or Mets.

    2) While with the Twins, I don't recall Krivsky being very active in pursuing Japanese free agents. Maybe a ex-MLB washup like Tony Batista that was playing in the Japanese leagues, but not a true Japanese free agent.

I hope they look into it, but I don't want them to pour tons of cash into it, still rather see money be put into better scouting and the draft.

The Kriv made a big point out of saying it wasn't the amount of money you spent, but how you spent it. I'm sure if they found some players that made sense for the team in Japan, Latin America or Lower Slombovia he'd go for it. At the same time, I don't think he'd go hogwild in one direction (draft, scouting, different regions, etc) just to do it.

I simply don't have access to a "cares about RBI" place in my psyche. There is a "mildly curious about OBI%" alcove just before the acid filled lake guarded by robot snipers with lasers which leads to the "cares about RBI" antechamber though. - Nate

I wouldn't expect it to skyrocket very quickly, RCast has only been on the job for a few months, it's hardly as if the payroll was going to double in size as soon as he took over.

I think this offseason will be telling--the first one with Castellini fully in control of the club. Let's see what kind of FAs get targeted, what kind of LT contracts get offered to current Reds, who gets let go, etc.
We'll burn that bridge when we get to it.

I believe it was a Reds scout who discovered Miguel Cabrera. However, the Reds weren't willing to pony up the cash. That said, I think scouting investment would pay more dividends in the long run than simple signing bonuses -- unless you are talking about a Jojima or Contreras. Even then, the cost is really high...
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
