Wily Mo Pena: (Wrist) Could See Time at First Base?

Update: Pena (wrist) took ground balls at first base before Monday's game, the Boston Globe reports. "We've talked about it in the past," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said of Pena playing first base. "I don't know if it will ever happen or not, but this is a great time to find out. The games aren't on the line. I'm sure at some point he'll play a few games at Triple A at first just to answer his questions."

Recommendation: After Boston designated J. T. Snow for assignment, there is a need for a backup at first base, though we don't see Kevin Youkilis getting too many days off. Pena, who will be heading to extended spring training in Fort Myers, is slightly ahead of schedule in his return from having the hamate bone removed from his left wrist.

I doubt this is the case, but I wonder...could the Sox be thinking of moving Mike Lowell to the Angels for Orlando Cabrera?

1. I know the locals in Boston are crying for an offensive upgrade to Alex Gonzalez at short.

2. The Angels would likely want to move Cabrera and his contract, and Boston might be the only team with a possible need at short and ability to take the contract.

3. The Angels just recalled super shortstop prospect Erick Aybar.

4. The Angels need Lowell's power.

5. Youkilis can replace Lowell at third.

6. Wily Mo might be able to replace Youkilis at first.

This is really a reach to assume from one little RotoWire story, but in the unlikely event that it happens, I can say, "I called that one!"
