    Joe Mauer is Jack Bauer

    From ESPN

Serving as Minnesota's designated hitter Wednesday, the catcher went 2-for-3 with a walk to improve his major league-best batting average to .392. He went 11-for-13 in the three-game sweep and had hits in eight consecutive at-bats before grounding out in the second inning. He is batting .484 (46-for-95) in June.

"What Joe Mauer's doing is sick," Hunter said, laughing. "Single, single, single, single, double. Single, single, single, triple. He's 23 years old. What's he going to do when he gets man muscles?"

Joe Mauer is the best player on earth right now.

17 out of 28 scouting directors picked Mike Radcliff of Twins as best SD, and a big part of the reputation is the selection of Mauer (over Mark Prior)

they keep drafting catchers who go on to hit so well that they can't be catchers anymore. What a problem. They don't draft Dane Sardinhas. (they did draft Javier Valentin pre-Radcliff)

Yeah, IIRC signability was also an issue with Mauer over Prior, as they didn't want to pony up the bonus Prior would command.

Any way you slice it, Mauer is off the charts.

Mauer is also a local product (Cretin Durham Hall HS), which always goes over well in the Twin Cities. Mauer's approach reminds me a ton of Gwynn. He doesn't care about power at all. He just goes with wherever the pitch is thrown and makes solid contact.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

IIRC, didn't Minnesota fans/press bellyache about them drafting him, even with him being a local product?

It was the year of Mark Prior's coming out party.

Back then, he was faster than a speeding bullet, able to leap tall buildings with a single bound.

    And stuff.

That was a fun draft year. Mark Prior, Dewon Brazelton, and Mark Teixeira were all realistic possibilities at #1 for the Twins (can't remember if Gavin Floyd was or not...), but the Twins absolutely refused to pick them because of their contract demands. Heck, when the Twins took Mauer, he hadn't even agreed to a deal at that point. It was unclear if they were even going to sign him!

Happily for them, it turned out quite well.

I just heard on XM that Mauer is dating Miss USA, Chelsey Cooley.

Sounds like he's looking for an upgrade to James Bond status.
