ESPN.com came out with the "who's the best player to ever wear this number" list for every number in college football.

They're sayin' that Archie is not the best college player to ever wear #45. And that Bennie Blades was a better #36 than Chris Speilman. Huh?

There are other Buckeyes who made the list: Janowicz, Hop Cassady, Bob Ferguson, Gradishar, Jim Stillwagon, John Hicks, Orlando Pace, and Eddie George (I didn't count 'em up but the Bucks may have more players than anyone else on this list--WITHOUT Archie).

They like Michael Irvin's #47 better than Chic Harley's and A.J. Hawk's. Tough to argue that one.

They couldn't come up with anyone any good who wore #29. Didn't Pepe wear #29? Oh, yeah, they're also looking for someone good who wore #69. Any suggestions?

Any list of this kind is going to be a bit questionable. Comparing across generations is impossible in a rapidly evolving game such as college football.

Got an email from my buddy about this list. Here are a few observations he makes:

Chic Harley was OSU's first three time all-American and put Ohio State
Football on the map. They literally had to build the Shoe because there
were too many fans that came to watch Harley play in old Ohio Field. If you
watch the documentary on the Shoe they show how they practically went door to door to raise money for the Shoe to watch Chic. Haven't you ever heard that the Shoe is the house that Harley built? Can they say that Michael Irvin did that for Miami?

#10 Art Schlichter? No mention. Dude was up there.

Baugh was the first great passer the game ever had? I believe that Archie
is STILL the only one with freaking TWO Heismans!!!!

No Tom Cousineau? Dude had better numbers than Spielman wearing #36.
