My bid to improve the Reds

-Trade OF Austin Kearns, RHP Ryan Wagner, and SS Rey Olmedo to the Angels for RHP Ervin Santana.

    -DFA Joe Mays.

-Callup OF Chris Denorfia and let him and Ryan Freel split time in RF (Ideally I want him in CF and Junior in RF but that won't happen)

-DFA David Weathers, Kent Mercker, and Esteban Yan.

-Callup RHP Brad Salmon and RHP David Shafer.

-Trade LHP Tyler Pelland to Pittsburgh for LHP Damaso Marte.

    Lineup:

    RF Denorfia/Freel
    SS Lopez
    LF Dunn
    CF Griffey Jr.
    3B Encarnacion
    1B Hatteberg/Aurilia
    2B Phillips
    C Ross/LaRue

    Rotation:

    Arroyo
    Harang
    Santana
    Ramirez
    Milton

    Bullpen:

    Shafer
    Salmon
    Marte
    Shackelford
    Belisle
    Standridge
    Coffey

If used correctly that bullpen could actually be decent. And when I say used correctly, I mean use the pitchers in situations where they can succeed, i.e. Shackelford as the LOOGY, Belisle as the setup man rather than pitching him once or twice a week.

I would also look into acquiring 1B Ryan Shealy to add some extra pop to the lineup, and this would also strengthen the bench by sending Hatteberg and Aurilia to the bench. Rafael Betancourt would also be a solid target for the pen.

    1. I don't see Austin Kearns and our garbage netting us Ervin Santana. Olmedo doesn't have a lot of value, Wagner is so far pencilled as a bust, and I don't think Kearns alone would be worthy of mention of Santana. I'd like Santana, but I think we'd need to give up more, IMO. Does the addition of Santana to the rotation trump the downgrade we suffer by moving Kearns to a different team? I'm not so sure it does. It still doesn't address the forest fire that is our bullpen.

    2. Why do we have to trade Kearns? Why don't we trade Denorfia? I think Kearns has more value staying on our team than leaving. I feel the same way about Griffey. The only OF we have that would bring us anything of value is Adam Dunn, and we shouldn't trade him unless Johan Santana is mentioned.

    3. I've always been a Marte fan. I think he would easily replace Kent Mercker, since they are essentially both lefty specialists.

I still think we have value in trading LaRue. I think we either play Denorfia in the 25th man role, or we trade him. I don't see this move happening in the next month, but I would seriously entertain offers to all teams interested in Felipe Lopez that can send us some solid, quality pitching. I would shop Brandon Claussen. Bottomline, keep Coffey, get rid of the rest of the pen.

I think you're on the right track with the bullpen.

If WK is NOT having on-going conversations with the Angels regarding Santana's availability, it is professional malpractice. He needs to stay on that one until it is clear that Santana is not available, or the price is prohibitive.

Re: My bid to improve the Reds

The Angels just DFA'd Jeff Weaver so I'm pretty sure that takes Santana off the market. Also our starting pitching is not the problem, sure we can use another starter, but who couldn't. Our problem lies in the pen, and those arms can be had for a cheaper price than starters. We need to look at teams that are out of the race right now(KC,Pit,Cle,Balt Fla,Was,CHC) and see if they have any arms of value to us. I like a few guys out there and some can be had more easily than others. here are some guys.

    KC-Dessens, Gobble, Wellemeyer
    Pit-Marte, Grabow, Torres
    Cle-Mota, Betencourt
    Balt-Latroy Hawkins
    Fla-Borowski, Messenger
    Was-Majewski, Rauch
    ChC-Williamson, Ohman

I think our best bet is to offer a package to the Marlins for Borowski and Messenger. I think they would welcome some prospects. I propose this deal:
Reds trade: Denorfia, Olmedo, Chick, and Pelland
    Marlins trade: Borowski and Messenger

The only way the price for Santana becomes prohibitive is when they ask for Dunn. Whatever else they ask for, they got it.

No doubt FCB, if there is even a remote chance they can get to him short of Dunn, they need to make that happen.

hell lets trade the whole first place squad....why not, its possible.

come on....u cant trade everyone on the team and build a complete new bullpen in the middle of a season...if we can get 2 relievers be happy. be very happy.

I think you're looking in the right places, but I'd stay away from Torres. He's been a workhorse in the past, but he's gassed this season, plus the Pirates just signed him to a pretty hefty contract for a long reliever.

Good ideas OBM. While I disagree with your negative remarks sometimes I like what these moves could do for this team.

Not sure if the other teams would go for it, but it's worth a try.

Santan is young and cheap and good. Why would the Angels make him available? And if they did a bidding war would ensue and the Reds opening offer will have to include Homer Bailey. If they're trading a young, cheap starter who will be locked up for a while, they will HAVE to get back a young top notch pitching prospect who they will be able to contorl for a while. I don't think the package you proposed would even get a return phone call.

There were rumors last week that the Angels were dangling Santana for a bat.

I really like Affeldt of KC and Wuertz (in AAA) of the Cubs. Both could probably be had somewhat inexpensively

may be tru but Kearns won't get it done and Olmedo has zero value to the Angels who are loaded with middle infielders.

Still wouldn't hurt to offer it and go from there. I never said the Angels would accept it. I'm just throwing out some ideas.
