I'm not sure what this means other than that he's real good at waiting for "his" pitch. Just thought I'd mention it.

I never worry that he is going to hack at a bad pitch and K....his K yesterday was a horrible called 3rd strike.

He's a good ball player. Many missed this fact when he was signed.
In Hatteburg's case your conclusion is correct; but the raw number itself without other knowledge could just as easily indicate somebody that chased the first pitch everytime and popped it up.
No one missed anything. He simply wasn't a good player in 2001, 2003, and 2005, and he was barely adequate in 2002 and 2004.

I was just so proud of myself for using a word like "esoteric" in a topic that I forgot.
Logically, a ball "in play" could be a foul pop that doesn't land in the stands, but I'm not sure how whoever compiled this stat figured it.

I don't get why so many people are down on Narron for playing Hatteberg who by everyone's favorite statistic - OBP is having a very good year. Then many people yell about him batting Dunn 2nd instead of 4th when to be honest you want a high OBP guy batting high in the order - Don't you? I think most people just look for things to be upset about. Narron's batting orders and playing guys like Hatteberg isn't the problem with this team.

Hitting Aurilia 4th every game doesnt help. I am embarassed to be a Reds fan every time I see his name there. I remember in April thinking how I would hate to be an opposing pitcher going through our lineup. Now we give them a break, every game, right there in the middle.

I'm a big fan of riding the Hatteberg career year bandwagon, but I have a problem with people saying "Hatteberg has always been a good player" when it simply isn't true.
And I still think batting him fifth behind Aurilia is idiotic.

I'm not upset at all. I think he should play nearly everyday.I think that his ability to not make outs is truly amazing.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
