    Hatteberg Leads In Esoteric Stat

Scott leads the majors in percentage of swings that result in a ball in play. 61.4% of the time Hatteberg swings at a pitch, he hits into the field of play.

I'm not sure what this means other than that he's real good at waiting for "his" pitch. Just thought I'd mention it.

Link? Does this count foul balls? (I'm assuming it does)...

I think it means a guy like Scott can afford to go deeper into counts.

I never worry that he is going to hack at a bad pitch and K....his K yesterday was a horrible called 3rd strike.

With an automated strike zone, the Hat would hit .500

He's a good ball player. Many missed this fact when he was signed.

In Hatteburg's case your conclusion is correct; but the raw number itself without other knowledge could just as easily indicate somebody that chased the first pitch everytime and popped it up.

No one missed anything. He simply wasn't a good player in 2001, 2003, and 2005, and he was barely adequate in 2002 and 2004.

He's having a career year at age 36, which is incredibly rare.

Sorry; I should have provided the link:

    http://baseballanalysts.com/

I was just so proud of myself for using a word like "esoteric" in a topic that I forgot.

Logically, a ball "in play" could be a foul pop that doesn't land in the stands, but I'm not sure how whoever compiled this stat figured it.

He would make a good cleanup hitter. Making contact is the most important asset in the cleanup role.

    Signed,

    Jerry Narron

I don't get why so many people are down on Narron for playing Hatteberg who by everyone's favorite statistic - OBP is having a very good year. Then many people yell about him batting Dunn 2nd instead of 4th when to be honest you want a high OBP guy batting high in the order - Don't you? I think most people just look for things to be upset about. Narron's batting orders and playing guys like Hatteberg isn't the problem with this team.

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

Hitting Aurilia 4th every game doesnt help. I am embarassed to be a Reds fan every time I see his name there. I remember in April thinking how I would hate to be an opposing pitcher going through our lineup. Now we give them a break, every game, right there in the middle.

I'm a big fan of riding the Hatteberg career year bandwagon, but I have a problem with people saying "Hatteberg has always been a good player" when it simply isn't true.

And I still think batting him fifth behind Aurilia is idiotic.

I'm not upset at all. I think he should play nearly everyday. I think that his ability to not make outs is truly amazing.

Given Jr.'s sudden inability to take a walk, I wouldn't mind seeing

    Lopez/Freel
    Hatteberg
    Dunn
    Kearns
    Junior
    Aurilia/EE
    Phillips/Lopez
    Ross/Larue/Valentin

When Lopez is out, put Phillips at SS, and leadoff Freel who plays 2B. Of course, Junior wouldn't hit out of 3rd and that would require Aurillia not cleaning up...

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Where's Castro? Thank God you're not the manager!
