    Claussen bombed in Louisville

Tonight Brandon Claussen, making a 'rehab' start, was bombed. He pitched 4 and 2/3 innings, gave up 8 hits, 6 earned runs, and 3 HRs. He also walked 2 while striking out 6. His AAA ERA: 11.57.

    Ouch.....

That's not a good sign. I wonder what's wrong, he dominated AAA ball before he joined the ML clubs a couple seasons ago.

Neither he nor Wilson is going to be the answer to what ails the Reds

Maybe(hopefully) it was just one of those times where the pitcher was getting a "feel" for his pitches. He hasn't been on the mound in a month and this was his first time facing live hitting, pitchers tend to not worry too much about getting hitters out on rehab do they?

Well..."dominated" might not be precisely the word I would choose...

    Good one cincy09.

I have often wondered what the mind set is on minor league batters when they face a pitcher who has been up in the bigs. Are they more hyped up to get him or what? Your thoughts?

    Re: Claussen bombed in Louisville

I held out hope for Claussen for a long time, but I think the book is closed in one respect -- his best stuff stayed on the operating table back in 2002. Sure would like to have the guy who had this line in Double-A at age 22:

    131 IP, 2.13 ERA, 151 K, 1.19 WHIP

But then, if he hadn't been hurt he wouldn't have been available in a swap for Aaron Boone. The Reds took a calculated gamble on his talent surviving Tommy John surgery. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Well, duh, he obviously isn't healthy yet. Whether he gets back to 05 normal is unclear. He may be joining Kerry Wood on the table.

    Re: Claussen bombed in Louisville

If Claussen does come back it's in the pen, I think you'll see us go out and get Mark Redman. He's not going anywhere in KC and he will fill in as our 5th starter and wont cost too much.

    Rotation:
    Arroyo, Harang, Milton, Lizard, Redman

Bullpen: Coffey, Guardado, Claussen, Mercker, Weathers, Yan, Belisle

    adios-mays....Standridge on the bubble.

I think we can land Redman by giving up:

    BJ Symanski(OF) and Ty Pelland(AA)

    Re: Claussen bombed in Louisville

Here is the scouting report on Redman

For a big guy, Redman does not throw nearly as hard as one would think. His fastball is in the mid-80s, though he has a decent curve, split-finger and an excellent change. As a hurler who nibbles and doesn't dominate, perhaps Redman's better season with Florida in 2003 is more about being out of the American League. His 2004 numbers are similar to his years with Minnesota and Detroit. Redman is dependable, making 32 starts last season, but he lasted more than six innings only 14 times. Nine of those 14 times came in the second half, when Oakland needed quality starts.

Sounds like Joe Mays lite to me. Thanks but no thanks.
