    Hunter/Stewart to DL

With Minny now within shouting distance of the WC, I wonder what they would have paid for Kearns and Lopez...they are severly banged up, especially in the OF. Oh well.

Lopez is a .260 hitting SS who is a terrible fielder. I don't think his value is high at all.

Their current 3b is hitting .209. Lopez is Ty Cobb-ish compared to that. I could see Minny paying large for a bat or 2, which would rip my heart out.

Which again makes me question the decision to trade him when we did--his value had bottomed out. To me, would have made more sense to play him at second (or first), figuring he's a superior hitter than any of our current SS options, and move Phillips over.

he wouldn't have been any better at 2nd base either.

Actually he probably would have, but he wouldn't have wanted to move

Lopez really isn't a 'superior' hitter to our shortstops, especially if RA would play there. Better? Yes. Superior? No.

If BP isn't moving to SS now, why do you think he would with FeLo still on the team?

Lopez is a far better hitter than Clayton or Castro. Aurilia is untenable as an everyday shortstop if we're really serious about improving defensively.

If Narron and Krivsky wanted Phillips and Lopez to swap spots, they could've made it happen. They didn't. I have no idea whether it was a conscious decision not to do so, I assume it was. Phillips looks like a slick enough fielder to me to handle that spot.

One reason I think Lopez was traded is because Boras would not
have approved a move to 2B,2B make less then SS and that would not please Boras or a Boras client.
The Hunt for a Reds October.

I thought Kearns was an potential to Minnesota before the injuries.

    Re: Hunter/Stewart to DL

I think that the Reds possibly could have been able to net a really good pitching prospect or two (Matt Garza, Glen Perkins, Boof Bonser, Scott Baker, etc.) and Juan Rincon/Jesse Crain along with Matt Guerrier for the Kearns/Lopez combo after the Hunter/Stewart injuries. Looks like Krivsky could have moved too fast on this one. As far as what I have heard however, Terry Ryan would have likely tried to include Kyle Lohse in any deal instead of a good prospect. But you'd definitely think the Twins would have had lots of interest especially in Kearns right about now. Lopez likely would have to play third however, because the Twins seem satisfied with the SS/2B combo of Bartlett/Castillo. They have Nick Punto playing 3rd usually but surely would prefer to use him in a utility positon ala Ryan Freel.

    Some Gardenhire quotes
"That's all we can do," Gardenhire said. "We're in dire straits."

With only two players on the bench, Gardenhire looked over his bullpen for someone who could play the field, if needed, and said that relievers Jesse Crain and Kyle Lohse were the best options.

"Crain's a good athlete," Gardenhire said. "If he had to really go in there, he could go out and play somewhere, I'm sure."

These two injuries come just two days after the Twins had to place reserve outfielder Lew Ford on the DL with a strained right oblique muscle. With Jason Kubel not really an option in left field due to lingering soreness in both knees, the Twins' outfield choices are very limited.
Plus some interesting comments from Rotoworld

    Torii Hunter - Outfielder

Twins placed outfielder Torii Hunter on the 15-day disabled list with a stress fracture in his left foot.
Hunter is expected to miss at least a month with the injury. A return prior to Sept. 1 would be a pleasant surprise and it's not impossible that he'll miss the rest of the season. Nick Punto apparently will act as the Twins' primary center fielder in his absence, putting Luis Rodriguez and Terry Tiffee at third base. The Twins are going to have to bring in outside help for one of the positions. Jul. 16 - 5:16 pm et
    Josh Rabe - Outfielder

Twins purchased the contract of outfielder Josh Rabe from Triple-A Rochester.
Sadly, the 27-year-old Rabe was the best alternative the Twins had at Triple-A. After a fast start, he had faded to .297/.364/.399 with six steals in 10 attempts. However, there's no one on Rochester's roster with even an 800 OPS. Rabe probably won't be worth owning in AL-only leagues, though with as few outfielders as the Twins have, the situation needs to be watched closely. Jul. 16 - 5:12 pm et

    Matt Garza - Starting Pitcher

Matt Garza took a loss in his Triple-A debut after giving up three runs and five hits in seven innings on Saturday.
Garza, who has taken over as Minnesota's top pitching prospect, had a 2.51 ERA in 10 starts for Double-A New Britain after posting a 1.42 ERA in eight starts for Single-A Fort Myers. Still, the Twins might have to think about trying him in the outfield. Jul. 16 - 2:55 pm et

I think we might learn over the next few weeks that Wayne got nervous and jumped the gun.
