    Venafro granted release

LHP Mike Venafro requested and got his release from the Reds' Triple-A team. Venafro was released by the Mets on March 30 and signed a minor league deal. He had a 2.45 ERA in 36 relief appearances for Louisville.

18 Ks in 22 IP, why is Weathers still on this team?

A LHP that has allowed 0 HR in 22 IP/ 36 games at AAA....why do the Reds let a guy like this go without getting anything in return?

Because of guys like Mike "two out lightning" Burns.

    Re: Venafro granted release

Mike Venafro's about to turn 33 years old and has bounced between the majors and Triple-A for years. He's a known quantity and a walking definition of "journeyman." Look at his numbers a little closer -- 36 appearances, 22 innings. He's only getting one or two outs per appearance, and if splits were available, I'd wager he's pitching almost exclusively to left-handers. Triple-A journeyman LOOGY isn't much to get excited about when we already have three lefties in the pen.

Wouldn't that have made him the youngest member of the bullpen not named Todd Coffey a month ago?

    Well... yeah. Good point.

I just wanted to mention that we weren't talking about a prospect here, in case anyone reading the thread wasn't familiar with him.

It isn't uncommon for a player who signs a minor league contract to have an out clause in his contract. Typically it states that if they aren't on the major league roster by a certain date, they can ask for their outright release.

Venafro will become a free agent and can sign with any team looking for a too short Loogy, who gives up too many hits. If he wasn't left handed, he would have been selling Lady Kenmores by now.

it seems like, about a month ago, I wanted him called up and got very little support for the idea.
