    Q signs with the Twins

Insurance policy: The Twins, who have placed three outfielders on the disabled list in the past week, have replenished some of their outfield depth in the organization with the signing of journeyman switch-hitter Quinton McCracken to a minor league contract.

McCracken, released by the Cincinnati Reds this month, is scheduled to report to Class AAA Rochester by Monday. The Red Wings were down to three outfielders.

McCracken, who played in 24 games with the Twins in 2001 before taking a leave of absence after his father's death, is viewed strictly as insurance in case another Twins outfielder is injured. The Twins still might try to trade for an outfielder before the July 31 trade deadline.

"It depends on how he responds down there at Rochester," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said of McCracken's chances of being called up. "We've got a couple of other guys down there we'd have to look at, too."

Andres Torres, one of the fastest players in the organization, probably is the next outfielder in line for a call-up. Torres, batting .255 with a .327 on-base percentage with Rochester entering Friday, spent parts of the past four seasons in the majors with Detroit and Texas.
