A thread last week by redsupport about who Joes Mays reminded us of got me to thinking about other baseball look-alikes.
I often think that I should start a thread like this in the winter, at All Star break, or at some other time of no-game boredom, but I never get around to it. So, I better get to it on an off day like today before I forget.
Sometimes there is an almost uncanny likeness between even biologically unrelated people, including ball players. Some that I can recall that struck me -- and perhaps nobody else will agree -- are the following.
Of course, a lot of these are Reds and some are old enough that many posters on this forum will not even have seen or perhaps heard of them. I'll list the older one on the right and his "reincarnation" on the left. They are facial similarities usually, but other mannerisms, too -- I'll put those as pluses in parentheses.
Todd Van Poppel and Jeff Conine
Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Guillen
Dennis Reyes and Fernando Valenzeula (+ physiques and southpaws)
Todd Zeille and Ken Boyer (+ stance & swing, third basemen)
Matt Williams and Harmon Killebrew (+ stance & swing, 3rd base, balding)
Enrique Wilson and Terry Pendleton (+ 3rd base, switch hitters)
Ricky Weeks and a young Julio Franco (+ 2nd base and hands held high at bat)
Charlie Liebrandt and Joe Nuxhall (slow deliberate right leg lift from the stretch position (no slide step in those days, I guess) – video clips needed!)
Jacob Brumfield and Paul Blair (+ after sprinting home to score a run, the arm and other body movements to slow the runner down and bring him almost to a stop before continuing to the dugout – video clips needed to demonstrate this one, but this resemblance is the eeriest of all to me)
Austin Kearns and a young Sen. Ted Kennedy (please forgive the non-baseball)
Jeffrey Hammonds and “Little Richard” (please forgive the non-baseball, and the antiquity of the entertainer)
Did anyone else notice these? I'd be very interested in what other player pair resemblances you guys perceive.
I know that photos would help, especially for our younger members, but I’m too techno-challenged to try that. Can anyone help?
