What does today's 9th inning mean?

So... Narron brings in two unexpected relievers in the 9th today: Coffey and then Bray. Guardado was warming up, I believe, but never came in. To my mind this means one of three things, and possibly some combination of them:

    1) Narron is losing his mind.

    2) Narron wanted to give Eddie some rest.

    3) Narron wanted to give Coffey and then Bray, in that order, some experience in late-inning, pressure situations. He knows that the NL might figure out Eddie the second time around, and wants a back-up plan.

Any thoughts? What do you think he's up to?

The only logical conclusion is that something was wrong with Eddie. You don't forego your closer who's been flawless, when he has to be rested, unless there's something holding him back.

Now, that's the only LOGICAL conclusion. The other conclusion is...well, its Narron.

I think he is up to what he always is, not knowing how to manage a bullpen.

So that's one vote for #1 and one vote for #2. Any more takers?

He had his head between his legs.

I truly believe we might have seen Aurilia warming up in the pen if he wasn't already used.

    Seriously, I have no idea.

Re: What does today's 9th inning mean?

I heard rumblings from Seattle fans that Eddie had a torn in his shoulder, which was the reason for his poor performance early in the season. Maybe, in an attempt to impress his new team and fans, he threw a little too hard and reinjured himself.

I would like to think the Reds would've put him through a thorough physical before trading for him, but he could've hurt himself again pitching in a pressure situation 3 out of 4 days. Who knows?!

I thought it was interesting that when the announcer was trying to figure it out he said "is he hurt, tired ,TRADED"?
I thought the fact that he even said traded was a little strange.

if (and i dont really believe this for a second) but if narron has a plan to gently ease coffey back into the closer's role what better time than tonight? with no berkman and no ensberg this astro lineup is amenic to say the least.

Eddie wasn't even warming up, I don't believe. When the showed the Reds bullpen when Coffey gave up the second hit it was Majewski and Bray warming up. If Eddie is hurt, this would be a huge blow to this bullpen, IMO. If not, Narron is just an idiot.

If you're trying to showcase Coffey, you certainly don't do it in a Save situation. That's the anti-showcase with Todd.

He might have tweeked something when warming up or have a stiff back.
Im sure someone will ask Narron about it when they interview him after the game.

The 9th inning shows me the Reds got a good pickup in Bill Bray.

    Young, quality reliever.

Yeah, all I can think of, is that Eddie got injured while warming up.

    -or-

    Narron is stupid.
