    Krivsky working phones
GM: 'I'm looking to make the team better'
BY JOHN FAY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

MILWAUKEE - Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky was in the office Saturday, which is what you'd expect from one of the most proactive GMs around.

It's clear Krivsky is trying to get something done before Monday's non-waiver trade deadline.

But as always, Krivsky wouldn't talk specifics or even vague generalities.

"I'm looking to make the team better," he said. "If I can, we'll do something. If I can't, we'll go with what we have, which is pretty good."

The Reds are 10-5 since the All-Star break and maintained a 21/2-game lead in the National League wild-card race.

Though Krivsky won't talk about it, it's pretty clear what the Reds need.

The bullpen's ERA was 3.43 since the break; it was 5.19 before.

The offense has been good enough, despite the losses of Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez.

So the most obvious need is a fifth starter. Joe Mays failed in that role. Justin Germano was making his first start as a Red Saturday night. Brandon Claussen is close to coming off the disabled list, but he was 3-8 with a 6.19 ERA before he was hurt.

Krivsky wouldn't confirm that the Reds are pursuing a starter.

"I don't want other teams to know what we're doing," he said.

The best pitcher out there is Oakland's Barry Zito. Zito (11-7, 3.61 ERA) was the winning pitcher Saturday against Toronto at home. Did the Reds have a scout there?

"I don't know," Krivsky said. "Where's he pitching?"

The other veterans said to be on the block include Philadelphia's Jon Lieber, Washington's Livan Hernandez and Greg Maddux of the Chicago Cubs.

CEO Bob Castellini has said the Reds would increase payroll to make a deal.

    Krivsky expects more to happen.

"I think you'll see some things happen around baseball. Whether they will involve the Reds or not, I don't know," he said.

    I like Wayne Krivsky.

You know he's doing what he can, you know he wants to win, but he keeps it close to the vest and doesn't show his cards.

    Dan O'Brien had no cards.

For some reason, this post just made me think of Dan O'Brien triumphantly slamming down his last domino on the board and jumping up to proclaim victory. Only to have a fellow GM lean over to him and say, "Uh, Dan we're playing poker here, buddy...what the heck are you doing?"

The domino connection is explained below (if anyone cares) but this image pretty much sums up my view of Dan O and how much out of his league he was during his tenure as GM.

I like Krivsky too...but he is part of the reason that the game of dominos will probably be burned in my head forever as I was out of town when the Reds-Nats trade went down and had actually just turned to an ESPN channel to look for news and the World Series of Dominos (yes, Dominos) was on when the trade scrolled across the ticker. I stood up and yelled, "What!" when I saw the details and my wife looked at me oddly and said, "I didn't realize you were so into dominos."

I've come to have a slightly better view of the trade but now I have these dominos images pop into my head every once in a while...hopefully there will be something better on ESPN when the next big Reds trade is announced...

I agree Krivsky is trying hard. However it seems the Brewers GM has made better decisions to improve his club in the last couple of days. I wish the Reds would have traded with Texas and gotten Cordero.

Cordero would have been a nice addition.

Yeah and Carlos Lee is a pretty nice trading chip. We have no way of knowing if Krivsky made a play for Cordero or not but he shouldn't be criticized for not getting him.

This is what I miss about the O'Brien era...... Redsland....

"Truly the news today causes a variety of effects, both physiological and psychosocial, but none more so than those with us now. Obviously the events of the day were precipitated by a litany of precursors, some in our control, and others less so. Still, as I look at the open yardage ahead, I know that other days will be like this one to one degree or another, but largely by happenstance rather than by design. Because let me be clear: a bucket is not a tree house, nor should it. With that I’ll take a few questions."

LOL- GM's today use Blackberries, text messaging, email, cell phones to communicate with each other quickly.

Dan O'Brien used the US Postal Service.

Of course he used the US Postal Service. I can't think of a more cost efficient way to send dozens of binders across the country.

No truth to the rumor that wan DanO was trying to make a trade with the Indians, he was using smoke signals from the top of Mt. Adams.

DanO tried covering up calling it a Barbeque.

The Postal Service? Carl Lindner wouldn't spring for stamps. DanO was all about the Pony Express.
