    Waiver Stuff

I know every year everyone has to answer the same basic questions on this, but what exactly are the rules for the trades? I know we have until August 31st and both major leaguers have to slip through waivers but can prospects be traded for these players or do they too have to pass through waivers?

Seems like it will be a fairly active waiver market, however...

I listed some names that I thought would slip by. Keep in mind I am NOT suggesting the Reds get any of these guys merely mentioning that they should slip through waivers. Lord knows for at least a handful of these names the teams would not even be open to trading the players.

Keep in mind some guys in the 4-5 M range with ERAs below 5 slip through, remember Shawn Estes three years ago.

    -Rodrigo Lopez
    -Javy Lopez
    -Bruce Chen
    -Latroy Hawkins (very overpaid...might slip)
-Possibly Benson but he's somewhat solid despite his mediocre production and large contract.
-Millar I guess may be a possibility for slipping through also.
-Clement in Boston would have but he's now on the 60 day DL so he appears toast.
    -Keith Foulke
-Carl Pavano (if he comes off soon)
    -Javier Vazquez
    -Aaron Boone (possibly)
    -Reggie Sanders (possibly)
-Mike Sweeney (they have Shealey now)
-Odalis Perez (looks like the Royals are keeping him)
-Mark Redman (not a bad chance he'll slip through)
-Scott Elarton (might slip through also)
    -Dmitri Young
-Carlos Silva (a possibility to slip through)
-Brad Radke (they would likely keep)
    -Adrian Beltre
    -Joel Pineiro
-Bartolo Colon (likely wouldn't be traded)
    -Garret Anderson
-Darin Erstad (if he comes off the DL)
-Adam Kennedy (good chance he'd slip through)
    -Esteban Loaiza
-Jason Kendall (they'd likely not trade)
    -Mark Kotsay (ditto)
    -Adam Eaton (possibly)
    -Orlando Hernandez (possibly)
    -Cliff Floyd (possibly)
-John Thompson (small chance but not likely)
    -Brian Moehler (not again!!!)
    -Jon Leiber
-Pat Burrell (small chance he gets through)
-Randy Wolf (if he is healthy)
    -Mike Leiberthal
    -Christian Guzman
-Brian Lawrence (if healthy in time)
-Jose Guillen (if healthy in time)
    -Livan Hernandez (possibly)
    -Kerry Wood (if healthy)
    -Phil Nevin
    -Glendon Rusch
-Jeff Weaver (whatever his deal is... unless his contract is already paid for by LAA)
-Jim Edmonds (Cards would never trade but if he cools off a little he could pass through waivers)
-Ken Griffey Jr. (I doubt we would trade...might get claimed)
    -Eric Milton
    -Jason LaRue
    -Dave Weathers (possibly)
-Andy Pettitte (if they fall further out of it)
    -Preston Wilson (ditto)
-Geoff Jenkins (if they fall out of it)
    -Jeromy Burnitz
-Barry Bonds (if they fall out of it)
    -Steve Finley (ditto)
    -Mike Matheny
    -Chan Ho Park
    -Ryan Klesko (when healthy)
-Brian Giles (likely won't deal but maybe)
    -Todd Helton
-Tony Clark (might get through but very cheap so they would likely keep him)

    Any more names??? Any ideas???

I thought of a Colon for Griffey swap.... or Milton for Lieber/Lieberthal and then trying to dump LaRue for anything.

Steve Phillips said that one year he claimed 250ish players just so his competitors had no chance of getting there hands on any of them. He also said that it is now common practice to claim everyone for contenders.

Thats why you put Milton and LaRue on waivers. I dare someone to pull that move.

The concept of revocable waivers and its impact on the trade deadline is one of baseball's quirky rules. There's no parallel in another sport but that's the way it works. Because of this you often see high salaried guys traded for players to be named later.

    Addendum to my earlier post:

You put Griffey, Milton and LaRue out there and hope for the best.

I hope someone claims Milton, and the Reds let it slide...ouch, that would hurt.

Anyone know what's the deal with minor leaguers though? Can guys who pass through waivers get dealt for top prospects?
