A bona fide starter No. 1. Solid glove man, No. 2. They need another contact hitter as well, someone that consistently puts the ball in play (ala Scott Hatteberg, but faster), No. 3.

    I'd settle for a Lookout.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

But seriously, getting a bat would be a great idea. Just so they don't hand it to Clayton.

    Thank you. Tip your waitresses.

    Makes all the routine posts.

I like your thinking. Could you please talk to Bob Castellini.

Many have suggested Phillips to SS; some have suggested RA to 2B. That may sacrifice some IF range, but it sure would take care of the "extra" RH bat -- Encarnacion -- and become possibly the best NL offense.

After Freel at the top of the lineup, almost each any every other guy could be a legitimate #3, #4, or #5 hitter in some team's lineup. For example:

    RF -FREEL
    LF - DUNN
    3B - E.E.
    CF - GRIFF
    2B - R.A.
    1B - HAT
    SS - PHILLIPS
    C - ROSS

That's gotta be the most potent 6, 7, 8 combo outside the designated hitter league.

Add to that a legit #3 rotation horse and the negative IF range factor starts to evaporate.

    Re: 2007 #1 need: a BAT

    My opinion:

RF -FREEL - good range, weak arm
LF - DUNN - was terrible defensively but getting OK
3B - E.E. - bad defensively but trying to improve
CF - GRIFF - terrible in CF, ZERO range
    2B - R.A. - terrible range at 2B
    1B - HAT - OK defensively
SS - PHILLIPS - gold glove at 2B or SS
    C - ROSS - above average defensively

so we would have 2/8 above average , 3/8 ok & 3/8 poor defensively

There is NO WAY I want to see RA at 2B or Griffey in CF in 2007.

Freel's good range & weak arm make him a better option in CF

RA needs to be at 3B or 1B only

    'pitching wins championships'

    Not true

    Pitching & defense win championships

I would like to see a 2007 team where everyone can field their position at least average ( with some above average ). Combine that with a team that is solid 1-8 in the batting order and we will really have something.
We already seem to have the toughest two positions filled:
Phillips can play SS & can hit.
Ross can play C & can hit.

Hatt is at least an above avg defender. I think he plays one hell of a 1st base.
