    Andruw Jones Placed On Waivers???

    MLBTradeRumors.com:

Rob Bradford of Massachusett's Eagle-Tribune apparently writes that Andruw Jones has been placed on waivers by the Braves. I discovered this via Buster Olney's blog, but I can't find any online account of Bradford's article. Said Olney:

"In any event, I seriously doubt Jones will be playing for anybody but the Braves, despite the fact that in the next week, he'll earn the 10-and-5 right to veto any trade. But we'll soon know if anybody has placed a claim, and whether the Braves are willing to discuss a trade."

Jones makes $13.5MM next season in the last year of his contract. He'll turn 30 in the beginning of the '07 season. Andruw's .350 OBP and .514 SLG are right in line with career norms. Baseball Prospectus expects him to remain at this level until about 2009. Remember, National League teams would get the first crack at Jones if more than one club puts in a claim. I could see the Cardinals and Astros putting in claims. If the Braves can't make a deal with the team that claimed Jones, they can always just pull him back.
What could the Reds offer for him?

Edwin Encarnacion, Chris Denorfia (Alone should make this deal happen), Calvin Medlock, Tyler Pelland?

    Line-up:

    Freel 2B
    Phillips SS
    Dunn LF
    Griffey RF
    Jones CF
    Hatteberg 1B
    Aurilia 3B
    Ross C

Technically it's supposed to be confidential. So there's no official published lists. A few names always seem to leak out.

I find it "stunning" that we have this come up every year. I know there are people who are new to the game and do not know all the ins and outs but the number of people who do not know this is amazing to me.
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...

I've always wished that they'd release the names of players that clear waivers completely and those that do not. I've never seen what harm that would cause, especially if players already understand that everyone will go on waivers

I'm sure "the union" has some "good" reason for it. Please note the quotes around the word good.

See I don't get what happens though if he passes through waivers.... Hypothetically speaking if that deal was the case Encarnacion would also have to pass through for that to happen, right? Or else you could bend the rules so much that the July 31st deadline would be insignificant. But minor leaguers... are they all elidgeable to be traded?

This is probably one of those instances where management and the union are in agreement. GMs don't want a detailed list out there of who they could have traded for and didn't. Players don't want a detailed list out there of who wasn't even worth a waiver claim.

I don't blame the fans if the sportswriters can't figure it out.

This just in ... Reds place Encarnacion and Dunn on waivers ...

I'd venture to say that most people don't know all the ins and outs. I never knew about the waiver-wire thing until I started visiting this board.

The Eagle Tribune is not really a big time paper. It serves Lawrence, North Andover some other small towns near the New Hampshire border. This isn't a writer from one of the major papers, The Boston Globe or The Boston Herald so he could be a kid out of college who just worked his way out of the obits.

I don't know why writers make something out of nothing in this case.

Every single player in the Major Leagues is put on waivers on August 1st.
