Reds sign ex-#1 pick LHP Rich Stahl, assign to Sarasota

Stahl, 25, was the 18th player selected by Baltimore in 1999 out of a Georgia high school. He'd gone 1-10 with a 6.50 ERA for AA Bowie this season.

Stahl is 6'7", and while he hasn't exactly put up great numbers (especially suffering from control issues), he's never been as bad as he's been in 2006 before. From his first appearance on the 10th for Sarasota in relief (one run in 1.2 innings, three walks), it appears as though he'll be converted to reliever full-time.

I assume Stahl's signing was intended to replace Zac Stott, who was sent to Philadelphia as the PTBNL for Ryan Franklin a couple of days ago. I would have preferred the Reds promote someone like Carlos Fisher (10-5, 2.91) from Dayton, but this is the move that was made.

Wow. He's crazy bad. Now that the Reds have put him in Sarasota, it will be his seventh consecutive year of A ball. He has a career WHIP of 1.61.

I vaguely recall that draft. It went something like

    14th overall: Reds, Ty Howington

16th overall: Red Sox, Rick Asadoorian (princeton's pick)

    18th overall: O's, Richard Stahl

rumor was that if Howington was claimed, Reds would take Stahl. Now we've ended up with all three-- and Asadoorian, still a CF, probably has the best chance of pitching in the bigs.

zero chance is greater than less than zero
