Joey Votto named Southern League Most Valuable Player

Joey Votto named Southern League Most Valuable Player
    08/31/06 - Southern League (SL)

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs is pleased to announce that Chattanooga Lookouts' first baseman Joey Votto has been named the Most Valuable Player as voted upon by the league's field managers, radio broadcasters and print media.

A Triple Crown contender for much of the season, Votto's name appears near the top of the league leader-board in nearly every offensive category. He is currently leading the Southern League with a .313 average, 154 hits, 44 doubles, 67 extra-base hits, 82 runs scored, a .402 on-base percentage and a .539 slugging percentage. He also ranks third in the league with 76 RBI and is tied for third with 21 home runs.

This season, the 22-year-old has posted 44 multi-hit games, including eleven 3-hit games and one 4-hit game. He has driven in multiple runs on 17 occasions, including five 3-RBI games and one 4-RBI game. He enjoyed a season-high 10-game hitting streak August 7-17. He also put together a 9-game streak June 10-19 and two 8-game streaks (July 14-22 and August 22-current).

The Toronto, Ontario native was named to the Southern League's Postseason All-Star team as a first baseman. He was also the North Division's starting first baseman in the 2006 Southern League All-Star game.

Previously, Votto was named the TOPPS Southern League Player of the Month for the month of June after hitting .355 with 9 doubles, 8 home runs and 24 RBI. He was also named the BC Headache Powder Hitter of the Week for the week of June 12-18, hitting .519 with 4 home runs and 9 RBI.

Votto joins a select group of players who have won the award. Current Major League standouts Joe Crede, Carlos Delgado, Jason Kendall and Derrek Lee have all been named the Southern League's MVP in the past. Last year's winner, Delmon Young, made his Major League debut on August 29, 2006.

The Cincinnati Reds selected Votto in the second round of the 2002 draft. Prior to the season, Baseball America named him the ninth-best prospect in the Reds' organization.

What's the time table for seeing him on the big club, if any has been discussed? (Kriv's made his intentions clear about HB, but has he said anything about Votto?)

How does the re-signing of Hatteburg impact the progress of Votto, if at all?

It means Joey will start in AAA next year. Hatteberg appears to be the stop gap until Votto is deemed ready. Of course, Votto could be a valuable trading peice for pitching, so who really knows?

If Votto is as good as his numbers suggest, Hatteberg appears to be Randa Version 2007. If Votto breaks out, Hatteberg may be expendable and could get the team value in return next year.

I am very proud of Mr. Votto. I targeted 75 walks in 500AB's before the season as a good middle ground between his career highs and lows. Last night he delivered.

I'm sure he'd have a chance to make the big club out of spring training, but realistically he's going to spend at least part of the season in AAA. Hatteberg, as good as he's been, isn't a likely bet to repeat his 2006 in 2007.

I tell you what, Votto has got to be considered a top 20 prospect in baseball for the numbers he put up at AA this year. I know he is usually considered behind Bailey and Bruce (because of their upside), but if you told me a 22-yr old second round pick (meaning he hardly came out of nowhere) was going to be MVP of the Southern League and contend for the triple crown, I would tell you no matter what that guy is a top 20 prospect in baseball. Look for Votto to split time with the Hat next year as soon as the Hat starts to struggle a bit. I agree that the Hat will most likely be trade bait come July, with Votto taking over at 1B full time soon after.

Do the Reds really have three top twenty prospects in all of baseball? It certainly appears that way!

I think if Votto was ready Hatte would have already been traded, in my opinion Wk would like to give Joey another year in the minors before bringing him up.

That's a wonderful thing to say, but the last couple of years we've been peppered with Veteran Precesnce and Playing The Game The Right Way that if Votto shows up, Narron's sure going to make sure he sits.
Some people play baseball. Baseball plays Jay Bruce.

While i think votto is a fine prospect, I can name 20 off the top of my head I take before him... no disrespect to votto, but he's not a top 20 in all of baseball.

That said, I think with Bailey, Bruce, Cueto, Wood, Stubbs, and the re-emergence of Votto, our farm system is in the best shape its been in in years. Where is Obispo? Add in guys like Sam Lecure, Chris Valakia, Logan Parker, Milton Loo, Sean Watson, Tyler Pelland, Phil Dumatrait, even guys like Philippe Valiquette and Rafael Gonzalez who are high risk high celing types.. and what about relievers Carlos Guevara & David Shafer & Calvin Medlock? They are projected as relievers, but they've all done very well this year and could add something to the big league club. I really wish the Reds wouldn't have converted Shafer to a BP guy - he has very good control and a good K rate throughout his career. I'm a firm believer in giving a guy who can start every opportunity as a starter until he fails... then put him in the pen..

Meh, bottom line is we should start seeing some of this talent emerging over the next couple of years. And my point in naming all those guys above is that even though the rest don't project as stars, they all have value & bring something good to the table.. and depth to the system. It will be nice to see the fruits of our labor, especially a pitching prospect. Its a shame we traded Ward - Brandon Webb clone and taylor made for GAB - although Lohse has been a pleasant surprise so far.
