LONDON (AP) — Pakistan's Cricket Board said its players did not tamper with a ball during a match against England and it wants the umpire who made the ruling banned from games involving Pakistan.

Umpire Darrell Hair ruled Sunday that Pakistan illegally scuffed the ball to make it float unpredictably in the air during a five-day match being played at The Oval in London. The umpires awarded England five extra runs and Pakistan's players protested by initially failing to come out for the final session — a decision that led to the game being forfeited.

Not a joke - it has all the hallmarks of becoming an international scandal.

Ball tampering has been an issue in international cricket. Unlike baseball the cricket ball has to last 90 overs which is similar to having a baseball last a whole game.

On top of that the umpire has been involved in some controversy before and he is one of those umpires who has a strict interpretation of the rules and enforces them.

This just goes to show that the people of Britain, India, and Pakistan are amateur cheaters. We mastered spit ball and the mudball 80-100 years ago, but in modern cricket, rudimentary scuffing causes an international scandal.

The next thing you know, they'll cork the blades of cricket bats. The horror.

A similar things has already happened - although to get power its not so much the weight of the bat its the weight and rigidity. One of the major bat manufacturers (and the supplier to many top cricketers) brought out a bat called the kahuna which had a carbon fibre sticker on the hill side. That was ruled to be illegal because it caused the bats rigidity to increase above that allowed by the laws of cricket.

I was listening to this story on NPR yesterday. They had a British journalist on, and he was talking about it. Outside of USA, this is major sports news. Considering the parties involved, it has implications for cultural and political life in addition to the sports involved. They said it's a serious, serious sports scandal.

In cricket tradition, if you're accusing them of tampering with the ball, you're accusing them of a lot more than being a cheater. You're accusing them of being a no-account scoundrel among other things.

The other interesting part of this story is that the umpire you were talking about is an Australian ump. According to this British journalist, everything was working out fine, the Pakistani's had a discussion during tea-break or whatever it's called, and they were going to head back out to the pitch to resume the game...only to be told by the umpire they he was forfeiting the game and awarding it to the British.

This was an extremely well-fought championship series, and apparently this was the year that the Pakistani's were the stronger team.
