Gil Meche Trade In The Works?

    MLBTradeRumors.com:

Seattle Post-Intelligencer columnist and blogger John Hickey indicates that a trade could be brewing involving Mariners starter Gil Meche. Meche was scratched from his start against the Yankees tonight.

Meche turns 28 in a few weeks, and he's a free agent after the season. He's been mediocre or worse this season aside from a lights out June. Meche has been awful in August, allowing 12 earned runs in 11.1 innings in three starts. Often it's said that his struggles are largely mental.

The skipped start could just be a demotion for the way Meche has been pitching, similar to what happened with Joel Pineiro. The Mets had expressed interest in Meche earlier this season.
    9-8 4.66 ERA 117K's

28 years old.. if they are willing to part with him for cash or some mid level guy I'd pull the trigger. He's been roughed up latly but a change of leagues did one 28 year old pretty well in Kyle Lohse and us needed a #5 starter may just be found in Meche

If Wayne likes it, I like it.

That's all you can really say right now...it seems he knows how/what to do

I'm fine with it as long as Wayne gets him a physical. WK's best trades are the ones where he receives healthy players in return...

Wayne goes all in with 7/2 off suit and wins the world series of poker.

    No-brainer. I like Meche.

    2002 to present
    Code:
    Pitcher ERA	IP	K/BB	BB/9	K/9	H/9	HR/9	OBP	SLG	GB/FB	BABIP	P/IP
    Meche 4.81	600.1	1.72	3.73	6.43	9.34	1.32	342	446	0.82	292	17.52
the HR/9 and SLG frighten me, especially for a guy who's been pitching in Safeco.

Meche is a pretty big gamble -- flyball pitcher, poor K/9, poor K/BB. At least he's young, though.

I think those BB/9 numbers say it all for me, don't expect too see him pitching in GABP anytime soon. Perhaps in the playoffs (vs. us)or next season but not this year.

If we are still looking at Staters... then why didn't we go after Moyer?

Meche was a mess early on in 2004. He lacked confidence and, even worse, command. While he was at Tacoma last season, roving pitching instructor Cal McLish saw that Meche was trying to hard to nip corners, pitching more like a sinker-slider pitcher. McLish encouraged Meche to trust his stuff and go after hitters. Meche did, and regained his confidence, which led to his strong finish with Seattle. He prefers to use a two- and four-seam fastball frequently, and both have plenty of pop. Meche's slider also is a plus pitch that he's developed more confidence in. He also will mix in a nice curveball and changeup
FWIW, i did have Meche in the 'worth a look' category of the free agent class. as long as he's getting less than $1.5 million in guarenteed money.

Plus the Phils had a chance to claim him before he got to us.

He's already had major labrum surgery. He's one of the first to come back from it as a starter in anything approaching his former capacity, too.
