Bailey will not be shut down

Apparently the innings limit on him isn't so solid. From today's Enquirer:

HOMER UPDATE: Homer Bailey has thrown 137 2/3 innings this season, and that's about as many as the Reds had planned for him.

But there are no plans to shut him down.

"He's going to pitch through the playoffs," Krivsky said.

Any chance he'll be up with the Reds in the September?

"I don't know," Krivsky said. "I'm not ready to say yes or no."

But it's probably a long shot.

Jason Standridge and Gary Majewski, currently in the DL, should be healthy and pitching by Sept. 1. Krivsky said Grant Balfour, on the DL all season, could possibly pitch in September as well.

A few weeks ago what looked like a longshot (going to the postseason) is quickly looking like a real possibility.

I still don't want him called up.

maybe they will decide to get his feet wet in september with plans of him making the team next spring. while i don't want to rush him it would be nice to see what he has. of course being in a pennant race its not really the time for tryouts.
there's nothing like bowling a 300 game! 13 now and retired.

One of the things you see smart organizations do, is that rather than adhere to some strict limits, they use the "limits" as a guidepost, and pay particular attention to the health/performance of their players once they reach that point. If Homer starts to lose velocity or control, or complains of extra soreness, you can bet he'll be handled carefully.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

It depends entirely on how the pitching staff of the month performs.

I hope you're right. I'm sure they want him to get that playoff experience, and with extra rest days, he could make it through the rest of Chattanooga's season -- even if they make the SL championship series -- in as few as four more starts. But if he shows even a hint of wearing down, I'd want him to pack it up for the year. I don't really foresee a callup to the big club.

Is anyone else feeling scared but excited at the same time? I'd hate to risk an injury with him so I kind of want to shut him down, but it'd be cool to see what he could do in a Reds uni.

That's what I think too. Right now we have a gaping hole in the #5 slot in the rotation that needs filled, and we might need another guy in the bullpen.

I think Wayne would like to avoid calling up Homer, but the Reds might end up being forced to do it.

Re: Bailey will not be shut down

I'd prefer Bailey get called up out of the pen for September. Use him sparingly and rest his arm mostly.

He's a cocky sob, he'll handle anything one month can give him. Start him off in Louisville depending on spring training.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.
