Here is how I want the roster to look next year:
    Zito
    Harang
    Willis
    Lohse
    Arroyo

    1B-Pujols
    2B-Utley
    SS-Phillips
    3B-Edwin
    LF-Dunn
    CF-Beltran
    RF-Soriano
    C-Ross

We might be able to contend with that lineup and rotation. Hopefully Krivsky can pull it off.

Heck, if we had that lineup and rotation we might not even need a bullpen.

Our GM is an "imbecile" if he can't win a bunch of trades and make that lineup happen next year.

And many local fans would still be complaining about a $4 hot dog and $6 beers during the playoffs -- reminiscing about the good ol' days of the $1 Marge Dog

And that team would win games "in spite of" Jerry Narron.

I agree. The bullpen is what has killed us. Bronson should have 14 or so wins. Get that worked out and then we will talk about getting another strong starter.

You don't give up on 23 year old starters like him IMO.
A voice of reason. I like EZ's upside.

No, you forget Lou Piniella is the manager with Davey Johnson as his bench coach

    closer???

    1. agree that Zito & Schmidt are out of our price range

    2. Agree that Ohka is OK but Lilly gives up too many homers to pitch at GABP

    3. lets look at the 11-12 pitchers who could be on the 2007 staff

    SP Harang
    SP Arroyo
    SP Lohse
    SP Milton

    RP Bray
    RP Cormier
    RP Coffey
RP Majik ( if healthy )
    RP Belisle

that makes nine + EZ Ramirez, Homer Bailey, Weathers? , Standridge?

now...who is the 5th starter & who is the closer?

In terms of the 5th starter a lot depends on how Lohse pitches the rest of the year. if he continues to be solid then the need to an EXPENSIVE free agent pitcher drops. if Lohse looks like a #2/3 SP then all we need is a #5.
Then we look at how EZ pitches once he has some rest.
Also Bailey is on the horizon.
If Lohse doesn't look so good then the need to sign someone like Ohka, Tony Armas Jr, Vicente Padilla , Adam Eaton, Randy Wolf , etc ( second tier free agent pitchers ) goes way up.

    4. I like our 5 RPs but I don't like any of them as a closer.
Bray has potential to be a closer. Coffey has shown he isn't one.
Majik & Cormier are set up men not closers.
It MIGHT be worthwhile to look at acquiring a potential closer.
    Options:
    Free agents
Gagne. Obviously given an incentive laden contract.
    Wickman???
    Cordero ? ( Brewers have a team option )

    Trade options???

The market for closers looks thin but I would feel uneasy entering 2007 with Bray/Coffey pencilled in as our 'closer'

Of note I expect Guardado's rotator cuff to give out anytime so I can't see him as our closer in 2007

I'd love to get Ohka... but I'd guess he'll command too much $.

Re: a solid pitcher for next year?

I believe Toronto's stadium is every bit the hitter's paradise GABP is so Lilly's numbers should be comparable. I wouldn't go for a starter unless they can get a Zito/Schmit type. Even if we can afford it I don't think it would be worth the risk. I know I'm in the minority but Homer needs to be in the rotation next year. He's dominated AA and most top prospects skip AAA.
