    The Comeback Kids

How remarkable are these comebacks? No runs until the sixth last night then score 6 runs. Down 3-0, no worry, there is still time. Down 3-0 against Houston earlier in the week, no problem, they score 4 to win in the bottom of the 8th. You never really feel like they're out of it. The starters have been keeping them close and then the offense has been coming through.
If they stay in first through this west coast trip, we have to like their chances for the division title. Forget the wild card. Forget watching Arizona, San Diego and Philly. Beat St. Louis to the finish.

How many games have them come from behind to win this year? At one point I thought the number was 9 but that was many weeks ago.

It definatley makes for some thrilling and wonderfull baseball.

According to a Mike Lopresti column dated 8/23/06 which I just posted in a new thread, they had 30 comeback wins, so last night makes 31.

    He wrote:

They have 30 come-from-behind wins, 22 decided on the last at-bat, nine with walk-off hits. They have won seven games when trailing after the eighth inning. Three times they have trailed by three runs or more in the eighth inning and won.
So out of 67 wins, 31 of them have been come from behind. Whew - no wonder ChatterReds phrase "pleasantly perplexing" is so apt. They'll be calling codes on Reds fans for the rest of the season.

It's the kind of stuff the Big Red Machine was famous for.

The never believed they were out of a game, no matter what the score.

No, I'm not comparing our talent level. Or our confidence level in said talent.

But I am comparing the never say die attitude they've exhibited thus far.

    It's huge. And it matters.

As discussed in another thread, a huge key to the offense is the ability to work the count and wear down the opposing starter. Break through that shell, and you can feast on the soft underbelly that is middle relief. That's where most of the comeback wins are coming from.

I can agree with you on that one. While we have some days where we get into "1st pitch hack-its" generally they are pretty patient at the plate and run up the pitch counts.

I guess Chambliss should get a nice christmass bonus if he is the one preaching patience at the plate.

And I'm starting to leave the TV on and not drifting away too far when they get down, expecting a comeback, just as I did as a kid when the Big Red Machine was playing. My son, Matt, says "they have to get down 3 runs before they decide they want to play."

The 31 comeback wins aren't nearly as impressive as the details behind those comeback wins. 7 wins after trailing in the ninth? 3 wins after being behind by 3 in the 8th? Comeback wins happen all the time. A comeback win is when the other team scores first and you end up winning the game but games in which you come back in the last three innings (probably against the other team's best setup specialists and closers) is huge.

It also takes a decent bullpen to pull off these late inning comeback wins. Kudos to those guys...

I agree. It's the late inning heroics that are amazing. A lot of teams would pack it in when they're down by 3 in the 8th. Not this team. They just keep coming.

The Giant's announcers had Johnny Bench as their guest the first couple innings last night. Bench said the same thing you said, that they thought they were never out of it, that they thought they could win every game. I think this Red's team has the same mentality the Big Red Machine had. Don't want to crow too soon but I haven't been this excited about a Red's team since 1990.

Well actually until here recently anytime we fell behind our odds of winning went WAY DOWN.

i havent heard anything on it lately and cant find a place that mentions it but at one time we were like 20-4 when we scored first and somewhere around 7-14 when our Opponent scored first.

The 94 and 95 teams were pretty good too. Damn shame...

Early on our starters were doing an excellent job and the bullpen was absolutely terrible.....probably the reason. Thank goodness the bullpen has improved.

I believe last night was 31 or 32 comeback wins this season.
