Gonna need BA to be big here today. I have this feeling that we're not going to get more than 3 runs off Lowry, and their pen is well-rested with Morris having gone the distance yesterday.

Nobody said they were doomed (ok, 1 person did)....I just don't think they're everything that you think they are. They aren't what they were, for sure.

It's going to be a tight, hard-fought race for the next month....should be fun!

Anybody else think Francoeur plowing into Nick Johnson was incredibly dirty? If I was Frank Robinson, Jeffy would have had some leather in his ear his next AB.

Yeah, one person did. The person I was responding to. And I'm not sure what you think I think of the Cards, but the facts are: they are in first place right now (and will be at the end of the day), they have the best pitcher in the NL and probably the best hitter in the NL.

I agree. It's been a tight race. But I'd like to win the race.

Hillenbrand strikes out swinging. 0-0 after 1.

Way to battle, BA. Ran that pitch count up, though.

Harang and Arroyo aren't chopped liver....Loshe has, so far, been sparkling...

After Carpenter, there isn't much left to fear when it comes to starting pitchers.

    Mulder -- just off the DL....maybe he'll rebound...jury's out.
Suppan -- without run support, he's nothing better than what the Reds have.
Weaver -- unless it's against the Reds, he stinks.
Marquis -- Not bad. Not great.

Same number of pitches for Bronson as Lowry, but no one reached base.

Simply put: so far, the SF offense is doing its job.

The Reds--not at all. Next hitter that swings on the first pitch from a pitcher with historical control problems gets thrown in the shark-infested bay.

Aurilia grounds out to short on a good play by Vizquel.

No. Harang and Arroyo don't suck, but they're two or three tiers below Carpenter.

I'd put Arroyo and Suppan on equal footing at this point in the season. And Weaver's been a surprise.

That's a bit of a stretch. SFO had no hits, drew no walks, and no one reached base. We had a hit and a walk. Came closer to scoring, which is the offense's ultimate goal.

EdE swung at a first pitch that was next to impossible to hit.
