Today, in lieu of Jonny Gomes being placed on the DL, the Devil Rays recalled outfielder Delmon Young.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but September 1 is just 2 days away, meaning they could call him up and his arbitration clock would not start.
But if I'm not mistaken, because it's August 29, his being called up now would start his arbitration clock for this entire year, would it not?
What's the advantage of doing this? Is there a rule that covers this I'm not aware of? To me, this makes no sense whatsoever. Why waste a year of the kid's arbitration when you can wait two more days and he wouldn't be tacked for the entire year.
Help! I don't get this one.
