I can't foresee any possible scenario where this ends well.

Ugh. He's been awful this year. At least when I've seen him.

I can only hope that this is one of Lance's worst sources yet.

But, hey, he can throw a baseball across the plate. Problem is that he does it way too well.

Wayne, its cool, you can stop now.

This might be the signing that precludes a David Wells deal.....to another team.

    From Lance's blog.

The Cincinnati Reds today signed RHP Jason Johnson to a minor league contract and assigned him to Class AAA Louisville.
Johnson, 32, this season went 3-12 with a 6.35 ERA in 20 starts for the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians and 3-0 with a 3.81 ERA and 1 complete game in 4 starts for Class AAA Pawtucket and Class A Wilmington.
Johnson began the season with the Indians and was acquired by Boston on June 21 for a player to be named later or cash. He was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on August 18 and then was released.
Last season he went 8-13 with a 4.54 ERA in 33 starts and a career-high 210.0 innings for Detroit.

The question is: Is he better than Micahalek? Maybe not, but it's worth a shot. Sadly, we have to have someone pitch every 5th day.

At this point, I don't think it's worth it to sell the farm for Wells.
Thank you Walt and Bob for going for it in 2010-2014!

I see no harm in this move. Likely signed for peanuts.

As mentioned ad nauseum this year. The problem signing crappy players (ie Dave Williams, Tony Womack, et al) is that eventually they are going to play. When they play not much good seems to come out of it.

Guys like Johnson should be forced into retirement, not be given one last shot to prove to a third team in one year that he no longer can get hitters out.

I'll quote Raisor: "The trouble with "Insert turd burglar here" is that eventually he'll be used at the MLB level."

Of course it doesn't hurt in terms of money or prospects, but it does hurt that the team has to endure his starts.

They should have just gone to the four man rotation.

You just know he'll be getting the start the next time the 5th starters spot comes up. He was probably signed for that reason.

    Re: Jason Johnson, welcome home

    This is a good signing.

There's no doubt that Johnson stinks, but to me he is clearly an upgrade over what we have.

He's been tremendously unlucky this season (.352 BAPIP) and has a DIPS ERA of 4.95. With average luck he should rank a little better than Milton. That's not good, but it's clearly better than what we have been putting out there in the 5 spot this season (Dave Williams, Brandon Claussen, Chris Michalek).

Obviously he's one of those soft tossers, but he does manage to keep HRs in the park at a respectable rate (1.10 HR/9 this year, 1.19 HR/9 career). Also, with this being the 1st time in the NL since 1997, he may have an advantage of facing guys he's rarely faced that could make him a respectable pitcher for the rest of the season.

At this point of the season, it doesn't make much sense to me to go out and get a Wells type pitcher and give up legitamite prospects, because the team simply isn't that good to go far in the play-offs. This move costs us nothing and is comparable to the starting pitchers currently on the market. At this point he's probably our 4th best option to start games the rest of the way.
