Wells probably going to Padres...bad news for Reds

    Updated: Aug. 30, 2006, 9:03 PM ET
Red Sox, Padres close to completing Wells tradeBy Buster Olney
    ESPN The Magazine

The Red Sox moved steadily toward the completion of a trade of veteran left-hander David Wells, identifying Class AAA catcher George Kottaras as the player they want if they complete a deal with the Padres. Boston has continued to talk to the Dodgers and Cardinals and perhaps the Reds, but it appears that San Diego is the front-runner to get Wells.

"I don't think there's any doubt now that he's going to be traded," said one source familiar with the conversations.

Wells is from San Diego and has pitched for the Padres in the past, and it may be best for all parties that he winds up going where he wants to go, because there is the possibility that at age 43, Wells would simply retire if he didn't like the team to which he was traded.

Kottaras is playing for Triple-A Portland, where he is hitting .233 with two homers and 13 RBI. The Red Sox organization is in need of catching, and Kottaras has a reputation as a solid defender.

The idea that the Red Sox might trade Wells would've seemed absurd two weeks ago, but Boston has now dropped six straight games; after losing to Oakland on Wednesday afternoon, the Red Sox were 10 games behind the Yankees in the loss column in the AL East.
Not this year...maybe a Wild Card

All they want is a AAA catcher? What did we offer?

That AAA catcher, Kottaras, is way too much to be giving up for a month of David Wells coming off significant injury problems.

Edit to add: Kottaras is the same guy who roughed up Homer Bailey in the Futures Game.

that would be a heck of a deal for the Sox if they get Kottaras for Wells.

he's batting .233 with only 2 homeruns? not exactly tearing it up.

Maybe the Reds could intercede and offer Milton!!!!

Kottaras is a real good prospect. I would be surprised they moved him for David Wells.

Seems like the last sentence in the third paragraph ought to be a bit of a deterrent. Maybe the Reds are on the "teams he doesn't like" list?

    His AA numbers: .276/.394/.451 - 8 homers, 33 RBIs, 50/68 BB/K

One of the best catching prospects in the game.

    Pretty steep price.

johngalt beat me to it. Those are his AAA numbers with a small sample size. Check out his AA numbers, where he spent most of the season. As has been mentioned, he's probably one of the top 5 catching prospects in the minors.

Ianetta, Clement, Saltalamacchia, Neil Walker...he falls in line right with those guys.

But the Red Sox are in a position to demand it. That's why I thought the Reds reporter was wrong when he said Wells "should cost only a marginal prospect".

The Red Sox have the only respectable starting pitcher available.. Supply and Demand.
Thank you Walt and Bob for going for it in 2010-2014!

Re: Wells probably going to Padres...bad news for Reds

Hearing the guys on XM Homeplate this morning, the Sox were asking more than I would hope anyone would give up for 6-7 starts of David Wells. If the Pads give up Kottaras, bully for them. Buck Martinez said the Sox had asked for Kemp, LaRoche, or Loney. Dodgers said no way.
When all is said and done more is said than done.
