Piazza arranged this through his long-time friendship with Ruby (Lasorda connection???). I've heard he does it every year when whatever team he's on travels into Cincy.
When all is said and done more is said than done.
I need to start waiting tables at 4 star restaurants....
I can tell you that this kind of tip is NOT common, not even from the wealthy or famous.
But when it happens, it restores your faith in humanity. Seriously.

I'm sure it's not....and I'd bet there was more than one server.
But man, walking out with that kind of change after 1 night of work would be sweet.
A lot of my friends work at a trendy hotel restaurant in New York. They split all their tips with bartenders, the runners, the busboys, the hostesses...and they still walk regularly with $1000 a night. They're union too, so they have insurance, which is rare for servers. And they do not nearly bust their butts the way I did as a server/bartender at a dive farther downtown. I'm not complaining though, I made good money, and truly loved the work.
