I can tell you that this kind of tip is NOT common, not even from the wealthy or famous.

But when it happens, it restores your faith in humanity. Seriously.

I'm sure it's not....and I'd bet there was more than one server.

But man, walking out with that kind of change after 1 night of work would be sweet.

A good dining experience is one of those "luxuries" in life that's worth paying for every so often. My wife and I have 8-10 "luxury" dining sports in the Cincy/Dayton area. We don't hit em up as much as we used to (dang kid), but 2-3 times a year, it's worth it.

A lot of my friends work at a trendy hotel restaurant in New York. They split all their tips with bartenders, the runners, the busboys, the hostesses...and they still walk regularly with $1000 a night. They're union too, so they have insurance, which is rare for servers. And they do not nearly bust their butts the way I did as a server/bartender at a dive farther downtown. I'm not complaining though, I made good money, and truly loved the work.

    Wow.
You forget it was probably more like 80 people. Each player probably had an Escort with them.

Wonder how much the servers claimed?
I've been to dinner at Jimmy Buffet's house, and I've eaten it at a homeless shelter. And there's great joy and harrowing terror to be found in both places.

Boy, you got that right. There are plenty of inexpensive little joints around the world with good food, but there is something very sastiying about a big, fancy meal at a "luxury" dining establishment now and again.

That reminds me, I need to get over to St. Elmos in Indy sometime soon.

    Yuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmm shrimp and horseradish sauce.

At those kinds of restaurants, almost all tips are typically claimed these days due to the splitting of the pot and the paperwork. Particularly since this was almost certainly paid for with a credit card.

As to why the cost was so high -- I'm guessing there was a very nice bottle or two of wine purchased.

Not me brother. Every year my mother-in-law gets us a 1/4 side of beef for Christmas. My family has steaks on dman's Back Porch Grill and BBQ.

You cheapskate, you didn't leave a $1000 tip?

It's fun to go to once or if you're trying to impress someone. I thought it was great.

But I'm also cheap. We can go to Costco, buy USDA prime NY strips, buy a bottle of good red wine, I'll stoke up a hickory-fueled fire on my outside grill, and I can cook a steak just as good for 1/10 the price.

Having such a weakness for the big name steakhouses, I've been to quite a few.

Cincy area steakhouses, in my order of preference:
Morton's (far and away the best in the city)
    Palomino
    Precinct
    Sturkey's
    Jeff Ruby's
    Carlo & Johnny's
    Phoenix
    The Waterfront
    Jimmy D's
    Encore Cafe

Morton's and all of the Jeff Ruby joints were pretty much on par pricewise, but the quality at Morton's was just head, shoulders, pick a body part above any of Jeff's joints.

Impressive that a national chain like Morton's can get it right at every location.

Tiger Woods is a lousy tipper.
