    The rest is silence

Last night the Mets clinched the Eastern Division, toppling the Braves from a throne they'd held 15 years. Some members of this board were infants or in utero at the time of their first division championship. It feels like someone walking over my grave.

    Discuss.

Seems like just yesterday that Sid Bream was plodding home ahead of a weak throw from Pirates left fielder Barry Bonds....

Was a beautiful run and coincidentaly, pitching was the reason. Some of the title's i never saw happening but they made good use of Hampton, Jaret Wright and a bushel of who are these guys lol.

Just so long as nobody mentions Leo Mazzone's absence as the stressor causing the collapse of the Braves pitching.

If he alone were the magic elixir, then the Orioles team ERA would not have increased this year with him on board, no?

    Atlanta Braves, 1991-2005

I turned a whopping nine-years-old in 1991, and that summer was the summer between the third and fourth grade for me. I hated the Braves as a kid, mostly because I hated the tomahawk chop. Then the 1995 NLCS made me hate them even more when they just ran over the Reds. That season was one of Larkin's greatest single seasons, he won the MVP, and darnit I wanted the Reds to win another World Series. Unfortunately, the Braves dashed those hopes with ease.

As I aged, I came to respect the Braves rather than hate them, though I was never sad to see them make quick exits during the playoffs. While I didn't care for the Braves as a team, I've always liked a number of Braves players - or now former Braves players - individually, guys such as Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Chipper Jones and David Justice. Heck, Maddux is probably one of the six or seven greatest pitchers ever to play the game, and much of his dominance came in an Atlanta Braves uniform during their run.

I'm not disappointed to see their run end. If they found themselves in the NL East basement for the next 15 seasons, I wouldn't shed a tear.

Another way to look at the Braves run is to think about who won the World Series during the last season the Braves didn't win a division title ...

Yep, it's been a few years.

My daughter found one of those rubber plungers that you used to seal the tops of Coke bottles with after you'd opened them, to preserve the fizz. She had no idea what it was.

My first summer job was making dittos for my older sister's Advanced French teacher.

Needless to say, I was high and blue fairly regularly.
