    5 Tools?

What are considered the tools for a 5 tool player? I've never really understood what a 5 tool player is. Can someone please list the 5 tools?

    Re: 5 Tools?

In baseball, a five-tool player is a term used to define a complete performer, an athlete who excels at hitting for average, hitting for power, baserunning skills and speed, throwing ability and fielding abilities.
    Got this from wikipedia

    In no particular order...

    Speed
    Defensive Ability
    Arm strength
    Power
    Hitting for "average"
When all is said and done more is said than done.

Would Edwin or Brandon be the closest to a 5 tool player that the Reds have?

    1) Hitting for average, 2) hitting for power, 3) baserunning skills and speed, 4) throwing ability and 5) fielding abilities.

I believe Edwin would be a three to four tool player, as would Phillips..

    Jose Reyes is 5 tool.

Would Clayton or Dunn have the fewest tools?

Edwin is too slow and as of right now is a defensive liability. He's a 3-tool player right now. Phillips is probably a borderline 4-tool player right now.

Barry Larkin was probably the last Reds 5-tool player.

LaRue.....can't hit for average, very slow, ok arm, so-so fielding, and average power.

Thinking about it, IMO, Dunn is a one-tool player. He's a very good one-tool player though. I don't know if Clayton has any tools.

    Re: 5 Tools?

Larkin (in his prime) was the last true 5 tool player the Reds had IMO.

Michael Cameron comes close.. In fact, he might be close enough to count. Not a high average, but a nice OBP and he could definitely do the other 4 well.
Thank you Walt and Bob for going for it in 2010-2014!
