Mind you, I'm sure Slaughter preferred the honor of HOF induction to all the debates about whether or not he should be inducted.
Similarly, Tris Speaker was probably a better player than Shoeless Joe Jackson, but the number of casual fans who have heard of Shoeless Joe far exceeds those who know about the Grey Eagle, a direct contemporary. Speaker wasn't the guy who intially appeared in Ray Kinsella's cornfield. The controversy of whether or not Jackson threw the 1919 World Series and whether or not he should be in the Hall of Fame has kept his memory alive.
Decades from now, when the greatness of Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan is a dim memory for most, Rose will probably be the best remembered member of the Big Red Machine.
    Thruth to this.

I still think he belongs in the hall no matter what else he did. He played the most games, got the most hits, made the most outs and I think that should get him in. If there were a tiddlywink hall of fame, the guy who tiddlied the most winks should be in.

Good post, RB. The above sentence is so true. Sad b/c he will be remembered for the wrong reasons. The hit-king who threw it all away b/c of a gambling sickness and the inability to get help.

It is incredible that in a society that is so forgiving to most that MLB is so hard-line in regard to these matters. I think that gambling is the worst poison for any sports game. Worse than alcoholism, drugs, etc (all are bad of course!). It can ruin a sport... plain & simple.

Pete has every right to make a buck and I do not think anyone has said that he cannot. But making a buck in certain ways does nothing but hurt any chance to get back. And we should not forget that at one time (All-Century team, Jim Grey live interview, etc) it seemed that Pete had a chance to perhaps get enshrined into the Hall. No one knows for sure except Bud Selig. Joe Morgan and Mike Schmidt seemed to think it was close to happening. But what happened? The love of money.

So do you believe earning an "honest living" is someone lying to you for 16 years, then coming out and admitting they lied and will offer you the details once you buy the book from him??

Pete belongs in the Hall of Fame. He doesn't belong in the Hall of Integrity. If the two are linked, somehow, they better start going over the roster again. Nobody can take anything away from what he did on the field. He didn't cheat. Didn't take steroids. He just played hard with the ability that he had. I have lost a lot of respect for Pete over the years, but I have also lost a lot of respect for MLB and the Hall of Fame. They have taken it too far with Pete and his rightful place in the Hall of Fame.

He's no different than your everyday used car salesman, should we lock them up, or some real estate saleswoman who tells you the house is in mint condition.

If a salesman or realtor admitted they lied to you then yes at the very least you can persue financial retribution.

Back to my question is Pete earning an "honest living" by lying to us for 16 years and then asking us to PAY HIM money to read the details in a book??

THey should have asked Pete why he got Rob Murphy warming up in the bullpen five times a game, or why he felt that he was a better first baseman than Esasky

I'll bet that Pete wouldn't gamble on lying about those questions. They are taxing questions for sure.

He isnt the first person to tell a lie and continue earning a paycheck, remember some average Joe (or Bill) once saying "you have to know what the meaning of Is...Is" or something along those lines and then everyone (mostly his democratic buds) patting him on the back and praising him and calling him a great guy and getting paid for it. So yes "its a living" happens all the time dude.

    Re: Pete Rose's quote

My newspaper last Sunday had an ad for some quarters with "baseball legends" featured on one side. 20 different players were featured. There was a quarter featuring Ty Cobb, with Michigan depicted on the reverse side of the quarter, a quarter featuring Babe Ruth with New York featured on the reverse side, etc. I believe that all but one of the quarters also noted under the picture of the player the year in which in he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The exception was the quarter featuring the only Cincinnati Red in the group: Pete Rose.
That's right---there was no Johnny Bench quarter, there was no Joe Morgan quarter, there wasn't even a Jimmy Haynes or Pokey Reese or Juan Castro quarter--but there was a Pete Rose quarter.
"Hey...Dad. Wanna Have A Catch?" Kevin Costner in "Field Of Dreams."
