Suggestion for everyday 1B in 2007

    Two words: Wes Helms.

I love what Hatteberg gave us in 2006, but I think we need to look towards the future if Adam Dunn doesn't prove to be a viable option for 1B. I don't see Hatteberg duplicating his 2006 numbers for us going forward.

    My questions are:

    1. Who thinks this is a good fit for the Reds?

    2. What does it take to get him from the Fish?

To answer #1, I'm completely with you on this.

To answer #2, I believe he's a free agent. How hard can it be to outbid the Marlins? Helms makes about 800k this year, and I think he's a good fit, basically a younger Hatte at this point.

No to Wes Helms. Either Aurilia/Hatte/Dunn until Votto is ready.

I think Jose Canseco could still play some ball. Give us that power bat we need.

And he pitches like the Reds bullpen, too.:thumbdown
I've been to dinner at Jimmy Buffet's house, and I've eaten it at a homeless shelter. And there's great joy and harrowing terror to be found in both places.

What about Nomar? I thought he signed a 1 yr deal with the Dodgers this past year but not totally sure.

Hatte vs rhp , RA vs lhp

if Votto kicks but in spring training Votto takes over for Hatte ( relegating Hatte to bench duty )

Two Words - Thanks, but no thanks - (that's four, sorry)

Wes's stats are a little misleading - His .932 OPS is inflated becuase he only averages 1.6 AB's a game.

He's a heck of a pinch-hitter and he's a nice stop-gap if someone gets hurt and he's better than Todd Hollandsworth.

I don't think he can handle even the platoon situations.

From 2003-2005, Helms has a .915 OPS against lefties spanning over 240 at-bats. This season in 101 at-bats he has an OPS of .900 against lefties.

So based on his last 350 at-bats vs. lefties, it looks like he handles them quite well. I would be all for bringing him in for a platoon with Hatteberg at first base if Aurilia is too expensive. Hatteberg hits righties decently, and Helms hits lefties well, we could get surprisingly good production out of the two. The key is to use them correctly.

I'd rather stick with the Aurilia/Hatteberg platoon. I think Hattebergs success mainly came from playing in GABP. Either way, he has pretty good OB skills. I say go with Hatt and Rich until Votto is ready for the bigs. Then maybe we can trade Aurilia for a reliever or something.
