Strait leading Reds prospects in AFL
Outfielder collects seven hits in first 21 at-bats for Desert Dogs
By Ryan McConnell / Special to MLB.com

Cody Strait may not be the most experienced Cincinnati Reds prospect playing in the Arizona Fall League, but he's out to prove that he's among the most talented.

The 23-year-old from Texas displayed his five-tool skills last year for Class A Advanced Sarasota, hitting .258 with 17 homers, 74 RBIs and 50 stolen bases in 131 games. But playing in the Florida State League is a different experience than facing off against the more advanced competition in the AFL.

It's early, but Strait hasn't been intimidated thus far. The 12th-round selection in the 2004 draft collected seven hits in his first 21 at-bats, leading all Reds prospects in the AFL this week. He went 2-for-5 with a double, stolen base and a run scored in Phoenix's 14-6 win over the Peoria Seguaros on Monday.

Here's how the other Reds farmhands performed during the week of Oct. 11-17:

LHP Jonathan Coutlangus -- Coutlangus shut down opposing batters this week, tossing three scoreless innings in three outings. The southpaw from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., allowed just two hits, none to left-handed batters.

LHP Phil Dumatrait -- Dumatrait started Phoenix's 7-3 win over Scottsdale on Oct. 12, allowing a run on three hits and a walk, while striking out one in two innings. It was the left-hander's first outing of the AFL.

2B Drew Anderson -- Anderson has struggled out of the gate, managing one hit with four strikeouts in his first nine at-bats.

OF Javon Moran -- Moran went 1-for-14 with four strikeouts in four games.

RHP Tyler Pelland -- Pelland tossed 2 1/3 scoreless frames in Phoenix's 11-8 loss to Scottsdale on Oct. 13. He gave up two hits but did not walk a batter while striking out one.

RHP Calvin Medlock -- After tossing a perfect inning in his AFL debut on Oct. 11, Medlock faltered in his last two outings, surrendering three runs in 3 1/3 frames.
