    Help: James Bond

Ok, a friend of mine is in the James Bond movie that is coming out soon so I want to watch some previous movies as a primer. I've never seen a Bond movie and have no idea where to begin. The only thing I know about James Bond is the martini thing. My friends are all artsy freaks who disdain any movie seen by over twelve people so they are no help. Can anyone recommend a good one to me, either a favorite of yours or one or two that will give me a good leg up on the whole story (who is James Bond, why does he exist, what does he do, etc.)

    Thank you,

RedsBaron is THE Bond, James Bond movie expert. Sean Connery is the only Bond worth watching, imo.

    Just my opinion:
    Start with Goldfinger and Thunderball.
If you have the time, check out Dr. No, Golden Eye and For Your Eyes Only.

Speaking of the New Bond, I saw him as Perry Smith in "Infamous" this weekend, he (and the rest of the cast) was awesome.

Better, and I liked Capote a lot.

Sandra Bullock was really good, Toby Jones was unbelievable.

Bullock was better than C. Keener? Think Toby Jones will out-Oscar P.S.H.?

Probably not, the thunder is gone. Bullock was more visable as Lee. Jones, is more dimutive then Hoffman and that added to the Capotes character I thought, plus I think that his wardrobe was better and Kansas plainer, I was getting a real sense of the juxaposition of both worlds more in this one.

Avoid "View to a Kill", "Moonraker", "Never Say Never Again", and the godawful "Octo*****".

    Re: Help: James Bond

If you want a good feeling of the Bond franchise, checking out at least one of the flicks from each actor.
I would go with Goldfinger from Connery, On Her Majesty's Secret Service from Lazenby, For Your Eyes Only with Moore, the two Daltons are a toss up (Licence To Kill, The Living Daylights), and Golden Eye with Brosnan - though once again...toss up.
If you want an interesting (ie, brutal) take on the Bond legacy, take a look at 1967's Casinao Royale and witness first hand how an all-star cast can make a truly remarkably bad movie.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service is actually a pretty good film. It's important to the story of Bond as well.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

"Casino Royale" is supposedly a reboot of the series. I recently read that when asked if he wants his martini shaken or stirred, Bond in "Casino Royale" replies: "Do I look like I give a damn." Bond would have never before said such a thing, as he always wanted his martini "shaken, not stirred."
Ian Fleming created Bond in the 1950s. For what it is worth, "Casino Royale" was also the first of the 007 novels. The early Bond movies, up through "Thunderball", did somewhat follow the novels. After that, the movie producers basically used the title of the novels and maybe the name of a character or two, but the movie plots had nothing to do with the novels. The movie producers exhausted the titles of Ian Fleming penned Bond novels with "The Living Daylights."
Mr. Cinatit's suggestion that you watch at least one of the films made by each of the actors to play Bond is a good IMO.
Sean Connery remains the definitive James Bond, and his first four 007 films are all worth seeing: "Dr. No", "From Russia With Love", "Goldfinger" and "Thunderball." Most critics seem to regard "Goldfinger" as the best Bond movie ever, but I prefer "Thunderball." I didn't care for his other 007 films, "You Only Live Twice", "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Never Say Never Again."
George Lazenby made only one Bond film, the underrated "On Her Majesty's Secret Service."
Roger Moore made seven Bond films. His best outings as 007 were "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "For Your Eyes Only." "The Man With The Golden Gun" and "From A View To A Kill" were his worst efforts.
I liked both of Timothy Dalton's Bond films: "The Living Daylights" and "License To Kill."
Pierce Brosnan made four Bond films. His first, "Goldeneye", was his best. I also liked "The World Is Not Enough."
Do not expect any realistic depiction of spycraft and the life of a spy in these films. Sheryl Crowe sang in "Tomorrow Never Dies" about "martinis, girls and guns", and those items, along with fantastic gadgets, outrageous villians, and humor, are all hallmarks of the films.
We have a thread somewhere on RedsZone setting forth posters opinions about the best of the Bond films, including best film, best villian, best Bond girl, etc.

    Re: Help: James Bond

If you want to show off:
Along with being the first Bond novel, Casino Royale is also the first Bond novel to be filmed.
It was filmed for television in 1954 in a one-hour episode of Climax! The first Bond was portrayed by American Barry Nelson, while the villian Le Chiffre was portrayed by Peter Lorre. The show delt mainly with the game of Baccarat. He orders a scotch and water in this episode, instead of a martini. I have the show on tape somewhere - It does actually move rather slow, but is very faithful to the book.
BTW, Roger Moore was one of the early choices to play bond, but could not because of his commitment to The Saint.
