The World Champions were only 3.5 games better than the Reds.

The Tigers won more games in the regular season than the Cardinals won total.

I guess the Cardinals picked the right time to give up losing.

Did LaRussa win this series or did Leyland lose it?

Maybe it'll just make it even sweeter to win the NL Central from the defending champs next year.

It sounds like the Cardinals' new stadium was "value-engineered."

How many days until Pitchers and Catchers?

    So did the Mets.
There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

So did the 1999 Reds, who missed the playoffs.

Baseball's great. It's NOT about win totals. It's about besting the other teams.

    What could be better?

The bottom line is that the Cardinals won when they had to win. The other teams didn't or couldn't. Just goes to show you that if you make the playoffs anything can happen.

not to defend the cards but puhols, edmonds and rolen missed alot of games. also with all the injuries to the pitching staff it was amazing they won as many games as they did. the talent on that team should have 95-100 wins in a weak NL.
there's nothing like bowling a 300 game! 13 now and retired.

Ricky henderson has a higher OBP than C. patterson and he's retired. C. Trent 6-14-2008

    Ditto.

You don't have to be the best team in the world, just the best team in the building.

Same can be said for most athletic endeavors.

As much as I lean on the statistical side of things, I'm developing an appreciation for the fact that the point is not to have a better team; the point is to win the game.

There is no platonic absolute truth version of how good a given team is absent it's actual performance. The quality of the team is different every time it takes the field and by almost every single measure, the Cardinals were the best team in the playoffs in 2006.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

You are correct, sir! The 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers say Hello!
